Why is my dog peeing uncontrollably and drinking more after neuter?

If Luger is going in for his neuter today, I would certainly have them check some blood work and a urine sample at that time to make sure that there isn't anything medical going on. It sounds like they were not aware of how much water he was drinking at the shelter, so the fact that he is not house broken may be due in part to a medical condition that is causing him to drink more water and you will need to correct the medical condition before being able to successfully house train him. It really depends on how much your water bowl contains, but if this is a rather abrupt change in water intake, then it should be investigated. Essentially, you are saying that he is drinking 3xs as much water as he was used to. He is very young for the biggest concerns with increased thirst, that being kidney disease & diabetes, but a urinary tract infection could cause an increase in thirst. So any change in behaviors should be checked out. Hopefully, it is nothing but Maxwell's preference, but better to find out than worry. Thank you.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. This sounds like urinary incontinence and that it is not secondary to a UTI. This could be caused by urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI), but is less likely to occur in males and more in females. JD could have a back problem or other neurological condition leading to decreased urethral closure pressure. I would recommend a trial of a medication called PPA or DES and see if the trial helps reduce the urinary incontinence. If there is no improvement after the trial, I would recommend more diagnostics such as abdominal ultrasound, x-rays or CT scan with contrast. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. He could have some inflammation from the neuter or a brief lapse in house training from the stress of the surgery and anesthesia. He could also have a urinary tract infection. I recommend calling your Vet Monday and see if you can drop off a urine sample. They can test the urine for infection. If he has a urinary tract infection then they can prescribe antibiotics. If hes doesn't have an infection ask if they can prescribe and anti-inflammatory, if he isn't on one already from his neuter, in cause it's just some inflammation. Inappropriate urination occurs when a dog regresses to urinating inside the house. This behavior is more common in male dogs that have not been neutered, although it can occur in non-neutered dogs and cats. The first thing to rule out is inappropriate urination that occurs when there is an underlying health problem which is causing a dog to urinate inside the house. It may have lost control of the muscles in its bladder or sphincter, or there may be an infection (UTI) or other condition as drinking too much (seen in many medical conditions) that is making it difficult for the dog to hold it in long enough to get outside. When a medical caused has been ruled out we can think about the second type of inappropriate urination which is behavioral (such as marking). If she is drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot this can be a sign of an underlying disease - number one would be diabetes. Did your vet do any blood testing? If not, I suggest you have that done now. The other option, if she is not spayed, is a pyometra (uterine infection). Again, bloodwork would reveal this as she would have a very high white blood cell count. Please take her back to the vet for some blood testing.

I'm happy to hear that Lill's tumor was benign. There are a couple of possibilities going on, but having a splenectomy should not result in urinary incontinence. Sometimes we will see dogs have to urinate more after surgery due to the amount of fluids that we give them during surgery, but this commonly passes after a couple of days. Since Lill is also drinking more water, I would make sure that her bloodwork was normal after surgery (as well as before). If that is the case, then I would have your vet check a urine sample. If surgery was 3 weeks ago and this is continuing, I doubt it will pass on its own, so I would take her to the vet again to investigate the problem. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
