Why are my dog's paws raw and bleeding from playing on carpet?

Poor Bella! No it's not normal that her paws started bleeding, and if it's cold and snowy where you are, it could be the ice or the salt used to melt the ice that has caused her paws to bleed. It looks like the skin has come off on certain pads like a burn, and that is likely a bit painful for her. It's not an emergency, but I would recommend having her seen by a vet for it in the morning. Tonight, you can try washing the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and bandaging the paws that the more effected. Put an Ecollar on her to keep her from licking at the paws. Tomorrow at the vet, they may want to put her on antibiotics if they feel her paws are burned. Unless there is some sort of chemical in the the carpet that Walter is allergic to or causing contact irritation I would not expect carpet to be the cause of bleeding pads. No, it's not normal. I could be a wound or cut. I would wash it well with mild soap and watch Rosie to make sure she isn't licking it at all. It shouldn't continue to bleed, but it could take a few weeks to heal up completely.

Beans-I love that name!! It certainly does look like Beans is having some sort of reaction. It is difficult to tell from the pictures if this is something that has just developed (an acute issue) or if it has been going on for a while. You can gently bathe Beans' paws with warm water incase he is experiencing a contact reaction to something outside. If the redness and irritation continues I would recommend having Beans seen by your regular veterinarian. They will be able to perform a thorough physical exam and discuss some other options with you. An allergy to something in the environment (such as grasses, dust etc) or a food allergy would be high on the list. Some environmental allergies can be managed with medications such as antihistamines and steroids, some also respond to special allergy injections. Food allergies can also manifest as skin issues (itchy, red feet is a common symptom) and can be managed through changes in diet.

It ooks like an old abrasion that is healing. Monitor for licking or chewing. Use an e-collar (cone) to prevent chewing if necessary. He should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. He should also only be allowed to walk on soft surfaces and can not have any running until the paw is healed. The concern with injuries on the foot is that they can become infected since they are constantly making contact with the ground.
