My dog's paws are cut and bleeding from leash pulling. What can I do?

Poor Oscar! Running around on the blacktop can cause a lot of trauma to the skin as you have unfortunately found out. You must protect the paw from licking as this will make it worse. He should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. He should also only be allowed to walk on soft surfaces and can not have any running until the paw is healed. The concern with injuries on the foot is that they can become infected since they are constantly making contact with the ground. I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian who may bandage there paw and give you a topical treatment or even antibiotics. If they are painful, this will make him not want you to put anything over them. He may need antibiotics and pain medications for them to heal. Otherwise, is there any place else you can take him to go potty? Could you carry him across the icy area to snowy or grassy place? You can buy protective hiking boots, but as with the socks I am not sure if he would wear them. You can go slowly and give treats while applying them. Poor Bella! No it's not normal that her paws started bleeding, and if it's cold and snowy where you are, it could be the ice or the salt used to melt the ice that has caused her paws to bleed. It looks like the skin has come off on certain pads like a burn, and that is likely a bit painful for her. It's not an emergency, but I would recommend having her seen by a vet for it in the morning. Tonight, you can try washing the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and bandaging the paws that the more effected. Put an Ecollar on her to keep her from licking at the paws. Tomorrow at the vet, they may want to put her on antibiotics if they feel her paws are burned. In the future, I recommend putting Musher's Secret to protect her paws before going outside (you can buy it online) or getting her booties to wear. Place an e-collar (cone) on Pardi to prevent licking. Gently clean with a dilute chlorhexidine solution. You can apply a non stick pad and bandage lightly, but you will need to change the bandage when it becomes moist or dirty. There are no OC medications you can safely give for pain management. See your veterinarian as soon as you are able.

Poor guy. His nail is bleeding because the kwik (nail nerve) is exposed there. You will need to go to the pet store and pick up Kwik-stop styptic powder and apply it to the exposed kwik (pink area) underneath the nail to get this to stop. Petsmart, Petco or any other local pet store should have this readily available for you to pick up. If they are not open, any vet clinic will be more than happy to apply this for you, because every clinic has this in stock. You don't have to stop walking him, but perhaps he will need another application of the kwik stop if he starts bleeding again. Poor guy. If the areas are relatively superficial, then you can clean them with Betadine/Iodine diluted 50:50 with warm water OR Chlorhexidine solution (2-4% diluted until a robin's egg blue consistency). This will remove any bacteria on the surface. However, since this part of the pet is always touching the ground and getting debris in them, you should consider placing booties (purchased at the local Petco or on Amazon) on Lincoln for 4-7 days until the skin starts to heal back. You may not need to keep these on Lincoln while he is inside the house, but definitely when he goes outside to potty. Alternatively, you can try placing socks or some kind of stocking material on his paws and then wiping them down with the solution when he comes back in. I would not recommend placing anything else over the counter on these areas. The paw pads are normally very forgiving when they just have abrasions on them and not an actual laceration (cut) of the pad, and heal up well in many cases. If the paws are wore down to the point of bleeding or show any signs of infection, then it is best to take him to your veterinarian for additional medication and treatment. I hope that this helps.
