My dog's paw has an open wound, bone exposed. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Coonhound - blue tick | Female | unspayed | 25 lbs

Mon morning my dog(recently rescued) went outside & was out majority of the day. Tues morning i noticed her obsessively licking & chewing/tearing at her paw (top) as i looked closer i saw a round (3/4 in)open wound & the 2 bones were exposed. She wasnt limping. I wrapped it & she went outside. She came in last night & i cleaned it (no bandage) IT was worse. This morning it looks like this. Look as if she is tearing it off herself. What is causing this & is it infected? No money for vet until fri

I am sorry to hear about Brownie May. She needs veterinary attention right away, this is a very serious wound and if treatment is postponed then she could be at risk of needing more extensive surgery. It is likely infected and also very painful. Imagine if your hand had the skin ripped off and bone exposed, you would be headed to the emergency room. I would look into finding a vet office that can take payments, apply for Care Credit, or borrow money from a friend or family member to have her seen. This is an emergency.
