My dog's paw has a mark and is swollen. Should I be concerned?

Just like you indicated, this could be due to a foreign body getting stuck in the digit though other things like a deep infection or even a growth cannot be ruled out. It could even be secondary to her licking at it. For this reason, it is important to rule those out. I recommend a visit to your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It looks like Lulu may have a mass near her nail. I would have her seen by a veterinarian to have this area examined and make sure it does not look like something serious. They may need to aspirate the mass and send it off for cytology to see if there are abnormal cells. She may also need antibiotics to help with any secondary bacterial infection.

It looks a little red and inflamed so it could be an infection. You could soak his paw in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. Otherwise, have your vet take a look at him as he may need an antibiotic to treat the infection.

Ouch. That does look swollen. Dogs can get bacterial or yeast infections around their nail beds. If that is what is going on, the Epson Salt soaks will likely slowly make the swelling go down over a couple of days. However, if Tom is licking the nail, it will likely stay moist and have a harder time resolving. Unfortunately, there are other conditions that can occur around nail beds like tumors and auto-immune problems, so if it is not getting better, is getting worse or seems painful I would take him to your vet. i hope that answers your question. They would be able to evaluate the area carefully and probably cut the nail carefully. Pain control medications and medications for inflammation may be used after to help with healing. Best of luck!

Zio’s nail would only be related to the swelling if it had an infection. Check the base of the nail for redness, a break or discharge. A swollen toe can be a symptom of many things, from infection, to trauma to cancer. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian.
