Is my dog's paw irritated after shaving? He keeps licking it.

I would give him a cool water bath with a hypoallergenic shampoo to soothe the skin. He should be in a cone if he’s licking the area. It is most likely from the shaving. You can give Benadryl to calm the itching. There is a section on this website with dosages and facts about common over the counter medications you can give your dog. The cortisone cream may help calm the skin too. This may take several days for the irritation to improve. If he makes sores please take him in for an exam and medication to control the itching. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent further licking. You can soak the paw in an Epsom salt foot bath for 10-15 minutes daily. Make sure the paw is completely dry afterwards. A soak in diluted chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) may also provide some relief.

It's possible there could be some soap stuck causing irritation of the paws, or even an allergic reaction from the shampoo/bathing. Yeast infections, fungus and bacteria and even some tumors, can also take hold between the toes where it tends to remain moist. Keeping an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Kilo and thoroughly washing the paws with a clean washcloth may help, however if the area doesn't heal up, remains irritated, or worsens, having a vet take a look is best.

This could be a small puncture wound or abrasion your dog got outside. If he is not licking it or limping on it, just keep it clean and dry and it should heal on its own within a few days. If however it seems to be bothering your dog or persists for more than about 3 days you should probably have it checked out. I hope this helps. It looks like he might have chewed a hot spot onto his foot. It may have started with a minor scratch or bug bite or allergies. That itched, he chewed it, which irritated the area, which makes it itch more, and so on. I recommend getting him seen by your vet soon to have his skin checked. After an exam and possibly some lab work, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and how best to treat it.

I am sorry to hear that Toby is uncomfortable. He may have been sensitive to the shampoo, or he may have some irritation from the clippers. I would encourage you to consider putting a cone (e-collar) on him for a day or so to stop him from licking them. If they continue to be red or not improving then I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. A mild steroid may be helpful in calming the skin. Sunny may be licking his paw due to trauma or a wound that is painful - dogs can sometimes have pieces of grass or small twigs stuck between the toes. Infections or allergic reactions can also occur on the feet, either to a cleaning agent or certain foods. I recommend having Sunny seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine exactly what is going on, especially because he seems uncomfortable.
