My dog's feet are pink and licking after grooming. What should I do?

It's possible there could be some soap stuck causing irritation of the paws, or even an allergic reaction from the shampoo/bathing. Yeast infections, fungus and bacteria and even some tumors, can also take hold between the toes where it tends to remain moist. Keeping an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Kilo and thoroughly washing the paws with a clean washcloth may help, however if the area doesn't heal up, remains irritated, or worsens, having a vet take a look is best.

I would give him a cool water bath with a hypoallergenic shampoo to soothe the skin. He should be in a cone if he’s licking the area. It is most likely from the shaving. You can give Benadryl to calm the itching. There is a section on this website with dosages and facts about common over the counter medications you can give your dog. The cortisone cream may help calm the skin too. This may take several days for the irritation to improve. If he makes sores please take him in for an exam and medication to control the itching. It's difficult to say with certainty by just looking at the pictures but in general when we see a copper/pinkish color change like you are seeing here it is a sign of saliva staining from licking the area. Tosca may be licking around her tail for a number of reasons including fleas, allergies or anal gland issues. She may be licking around her foot due to allergies, skin irritation or from a nail disorder or infection. To ensure fleas and not causing this make sure you are using a good quality flea product like Nexguard, Vectra, Advantage, Frontline or Bravecto. You can do some medicated bathing to see if this helps reduce the irritation. A veterinarian will be able to help you decide if Tosca's anal glands are causing an issue by doing a rectal exam. Feeding a small amount of plain canned pumpkin can help with anal gland issues. If Tosca continues to have these saliva stained areas or develops more areas of irritation it would be a good idea to schedule an appointment with a veterinarian.

It is hard to tell from the photo but I think it looks like he might have gotten some razor burn which irritated him. The irritation has caused him to lick at it which has made it worse. Hello. This is a very typical presentation of a dog with Atopy, an inhalant or contact skin allergy. Your veterinarian can recommend several different manners in which to address this problem, including medicated shampoos or oral/injectable antiallergy treatments. It sounds like Toby may be suffering from some allergies. Dogs can be allergic to grass, pollen, trees, fleas and more. Make sure you have him on a good flea prevention like nextgard, comfortis, or frontline plus. The best thing you can do while waiting to get to a vet would be to stop the chewing by putting on a cone collar and you can give him 25mg Benadryl (1 adult tablet) twice a day to help. Also, you can put neosporin and/or Benadryl spray on the scabs. But if he doesn't stop chewing/licking they will not get better. And he may need something stronger than Benadryl like a steroid which can be prescribed by your vet. Your vet may also prescribe some antibiotics if he isn't improving.

Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent further licking. You can soak the paw in an Epsom salt foot bath for 10-15 minutes daily. Make sure the paw is completely dry afterwards. A soak in diluted chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) may also provide some relief.
