Dog paw abscess growing something, still red, limping. What's wrong?

Many problems can cause abscesses such as puncture wounds, migrating foreign object, bone infection, and even a sterile inflammatory disorder called panniculitis. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. . Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a small abscess. It could be caused by a foreign body that went under the skin but not necessarily. Please, take your dog to your local vets as the lump will have to be lanced and flushed. Also, most likely your dog will be prescribed a course of antibiotics.

I am sorry Butch is not feeling well. It does appear like he has a small abscess or cyst on his foot. These can be hard to heal because of the location. I would recommend warm compress or even using epson salt soaks 2 times a day for 10-15 minutes. Also continue with oral antibiotics and pain medications. If it is still not resolving than possible a culture to determine the exact cause of the infection is needed. Make sure Butch is wearing an e-collar to prevent him from licking the worse and making the infection worse. Hope that helps and he feels better soon

it looks infected and like there is pus in it. If there is no improvement after antibiotics then he needs it biopsied or surgically removed. They can sedated him to clean the hair and area then see if there is a foreign body stuck in it causing the recurring problem or a growth. Surgically removing it can get your to clean fresh edges and ahead of the infection.

There are other possibilities. It could be a foreign body reaction (so there is something underneath the skin and the result is a small abscess) or it could be an inflammation due to allergic reaction (less likely if the other paws are normal). A check up is needed anyway to understand the underlying problem and a buster collar may be quite useful to avoid further licking/chewing of the area.
