My puppy is home after Parvo. Can he get sick again? What symptoms?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 19 days old | 17 lbs

My puppy was sent home today (yay!!!) from the vet after battling Parvo. We were given 3 medications for him to take every 12 hours. Is there any possibility he could regress? Or since we were sent home we are out of the woods? If regression is possible, what symptoms should I look out for?

I’m glad to hear that your Jasper is back home! Parvo can be tricky, and Jasper will need to be monitored carefully for any returning signs of illness. If you notice any vomiting, diarrhea, decrease in appetite, decrease in energy, or blood in the stool, please contact your vet right away. It depends on how sick he was and how long he was hospitalized. Typically a parvo case will take 3-7 days to improve and once they start eating well enough to transition to oral medicines they are considered out of the woods and continue to improve. If you notice any vomiting or diarrhea then I would be concerned.

Poor Jasper! Parvo can usually have a good outcome with aggressive therapy. I think the best place for him is at the emergency clinic for the weekend so he can be monitored 24 hours and receive the proper IV fluids and antibiotics. If he is feeling better by Tuesday, then you could potentially transfer him to your local vet. I would discuss this with the emergency vet at this time.

Parvo lives really well in the environment so I would bleach all the bedding and areas that he has been. I would also not allow any new puppies in the area for a year to be extra safe. Finally, once he gets better make sure he gets a booster for parvo and then 2 more sets of booster each 3 weeks apart to make sure he is protected. I hope this helps!

It is unlikely. Parvo, like chicken pox in people, is in a class of viruses that once your get it and your body makes an immune response to it, you cannot get it again. Any other puppy that goes there can be exposed to it through if not adequately vaccinated.

My dog survived parvo. Can he get parvovirus again with diarrhea?

It would be extremely unlikely for a dog that has survived parvovirus to be affected again - the virus provides such excellent immunity that some veterinarians will take serum from recovered dogs to give transfusions to those affected with the disease (although this may or may not help). There are many other diseases that could cause diarrhea with that distinctive parvoviral smell. If the diarrhea is severe I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian who can run some tests to determine what might be causing his diarrhea this time around and start some treatment.

My puppy is weak after parvo. What are recovery signs & next steps?

Clinical signs of good appetite, normal activity and mental status and no more vomiting or diarrhoea episodes are usually signs of good recovery. It sounds like Harley is not recovering very well. My puppy had parvo. When can they come home and will they retest?

I'm glad to hear Nova is responding to treatment. To answer your questions: No, she will not always test positive. Once the infection is cleared, she will test negative. Most vets will not test again for parvo unless the puppy seems to be doing something unexpected. If the puppy seems to be recovering normally, it's not likely they will retest. I do caution though that some vets may have different protocols. They determine when a pet can go home by their behavior. In general, once a puppy is eating and drinking on their own, seems bright and is not longer vomiting or having severe diarrhea, they can usually go home. They must also have normal levels of protein in their blood. I certainly recommend to discuss your concerns with your veterinarian. They can keep you updated on Nova's progress. Most vets will want a puppy to display signs of recovery for at least 1-2 days before going home. I hope Nova continues to do well!

My dog just came home from parvo, still vomiting. What should I do?

Oh goodness. I’m so sorry Oakley is still sick. It is possible that she still needs some anti nausea medications. Occasionally parvovirus puppies will develop an intussception. This can end up being very serious and may end up needing surgery. Please take her back to your veterinarian tomorrow morning and decide what else she may need. I hope she improves soon.

I'm sorry to hear that Bruno has been so sick. It is difficult for us to know what the problem is without more information and reviewing the blood work. A consultation may be more beneficial for you in that we can ask questions and you can upload the bloodwork for us to review. It is possible that Bruno is still fighting off parvovirus, but he may have also developed a new infection has parvo virus affects the immune system as well.

What are the health risks for a puppy that survived parvo or was exposed?

I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee).
