My puppy is weak after parvo. What are recovery signs & next steps?

This is a sign of extreme weakness, your puppy is obviously still very far from recovering from Parvo, you need to make sure he stays hydrated, if he isn't vomiting you need to encourage him to drink as much as possible, and of course continue with the treatment your vet gave you.

If she's stopped having diarrhea, this is a good sign. I hope that she has some medication on board for nausea and vomiting - if not, your vet should be able to prescribe some for you to give at home. Normally, with parvo, the best sign of recovery is when they have gone 24 hours without any vomiting and are eating on their own - until then, you need to continue treatment with fluids and other supportive care.

These are very positive signs! When a dog survives the first four days of parvo, they have a very good chance of recovery. It may be a few weeks before Sammy is back to himself, but I think based on what you are telling us, those are good signs.

It sounds like your puppy is extremely sick, and parvovirus can take a few weeks for a dog to fully recover. It's very concerning he is not drinking as dehydration is the number one cause of death in these animals. He should see a vet again immediately, please take him into one now. Best of luck.

Hi there and thanks for your question. I am sorry to hear Lilly has parvovirus infection. That good to hear she is swallowing, but if she really is unresponsive (meaning you cannot get her attention and she will not move from her position), then that is very concerning and she will need to see an emergency veterinarian right away. Most pets will begin showing signs of recovery after 4-5 days of starting treatment. It sounds like Celie is still not doing as well as expected and that is concerning. I recommend to have her examined again. Have her bloodwork checked to see if she is struggling with low blood protein levels or low platelet numbers. Some pets may need additional colloid fluids or a plasma transfusion. Your veterinarian may also need to do an x-ray to see if there is something else going on like an intestinal blockage. Celie should also be eating a bland diet. I recommend one of the prescription diets like Hill's i/d or Royal Canin gastrointestinal. She may need to be force fed (but only do so with your veterinarian's approval). If you do continue to feed her baby food, make sure there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients. If you cannot get food into her easily, she may need a feeding tube placed or other form of parenternal nutrition. It sounds like you are trying very hard. I can't say if she should be examined tonight or not since I can't examine her and don't know what condition she is in. If she is declining though, she should be examined tonight for sure. Definitely have her checked first thing tomorrow morning if she does not go in tonight. I hope this helps and that Celie starts to recover as expected.
