My dog is panting, shaking, has a hard stomach, and can't pee. Urgent?

Lola sounds ill, and it's quite concerning that she is squatting constantly to pee with nothing coming out. That can be a sign of bladder stones, and if these bladder stones are blocking her urethra, it is a medical emergency. A blocked urethra can lead to the bladder rupture. She could also be suffering from a UTI. Panting is a sign of pain in dogs, so if Lola is panting, I would believe that she is in pain. Based on her symptoms, it would be best if she was seen by a vet immediately. I would take her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now.

Yes, please take her in right away. This sounds like she is in a lot of pain. Dogs pant a lot and tremble when they are in pain. Since she’s not spayed she could have a uterine infection that can become life threatening, or many small dogs get intervertebral disc disease which can cause the symptoms you are seeing. They will need to do an exam and possibly lab tests or X-rays to get a diagnosis, then they can give pain medication and the appropriate treatment. Also if she is having trouble urinating or defecating? Anytime an animal is not breathing normally it is an emergency. Sometimes the breathing can look abnormal when they are in pain or have a fever but there are more serious causes for trouble breathing that are life threatening: heart failure, pneumonia, pleural effusion, cancer. The abnormal breathing alone is a reason to take her to an emergency room now. If you mean she is straining to urinate and is NOT passing urine, that is also a life threatening problem and see should be taken to an open emergency room. Causes of being unable or urinate are most commonly from a bladder stone stuck in the urethra or a bladder tumor. When dogs strain to pee they can vomit and pant due to pain If she is straining to poop, then that likely means she has diarrhea and feels the urge to go but doesn't have any stool to pass. Since she is also vomiting she could have an upset stomach from: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infection, ate something gross, food change, new treat or table food, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion. If she is straining to poop then that can wait for your vet to open. Trouble breathing and urinating shouldn't wait. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

If Bells appears to be in any sort of respiratory distress, I must recommend that you get her to an ER right away to be stabilized. If she is simply panting due to some sort of stress or discomfort, this is not necessarily required. Regardless, it sounds like she is definitely experiencing some pretty severe discomfort. I'm not sure what they did for her at the clinic earlier, but it doesn't seem to have addressed whatever it is that is currently bothering her. If these sort of symptoms continue into the afternoon today, I would recommend getting her into a clinic for a follow up exam and diagnostics to assess the problem. If they believe she is in pain somewhere, perhaps imaging would be next best things in terms of diagnostics. Hope this makes sense.

I strongly recommend taking brownie into the veterinarian this morning. If she is panting and standing where she can't get comfortable that's often a sign of severe discomfort or pain. Boxers can potentially be prone to gastric bloat or GDV which is a life-threatening emergency. Some other signs can be abdominal distention, or having a very hard or tense abdomen. But in some dogs you cannot always see an enlarged abdomen. Other possibilities maybe neck or back pain or injury preventing her from sitting or lying down. Which would still benefit from a veterinary visit to assess and get her appropriate medication. Please do not give over-the-counter pain medicine as many are toxic to dogs and can interfere with appropriate diagnosis and treatment when you do get her to the vet. If you are certain that Gus has not urinated in three days, you need to take him to a veterinarian right away. If he has a blockage in his urethra, this is a life threatening emergency. If it is an obstruction in his urethra, unfortunately there is just not a way for you to fix that or make it better at home, and the consequences of waiting --to see how he does in the hopes that it is something else--the consequences are too great. Most often a urethral obstruction is caused by a bladder stone that slips into the urethra causing an obstruction when it hits the os penis (the bone inside of the dog's penis). I'ms sorry I don't have a better solution for you. You need to take him to a vet NOW. If you don't have a veterinary emergency hospital near you, call your regular vet even if they are closed.
