My dog is panting heavily after a thunderstorm. Is it anxiety or heat?

These are vague signs that could indicate several things like anxiety or pain. If there is something they could be making him anxious (rain, thunder, fireworks, new people, etc), then he will calm down afterwards. Just give him some extra attention. If there is nothing you can think that is making him anxious he could be in discomfort. I would have your vet do an exam to make sure he doesn't need any pain medication. I would not give net human pain meds as most of these are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!

Not to state what seems obvious, but it sounds like Darwin has become sensitive/anxious about the wind, and likely can't calm down even though perhaps it has died down or stopped. Sudden changes in pressure and weather can be very disconcerting for some dogs. Thank you for your question! The increased panting could be due to a number of things. Based on your location, the outside temperature could be making things a bit more warm for Reese and as he is an older guy, he most likely does not tolerate the heat as well as he used to. Due to his age, I would certainly want a basic blood panel run on Reese to see if there are any systemic causes of the panting. I know this is not necessarily a low cost option but it would give you the most information to start with. If the cataracts are causing blindness and consequently causing anxiety due to this, there unfortunately is not much for a low cost option to help with the cataracts. I would see if putting a fan nearby reduces his panting. For anxiety, you can try an Adaptil collar and diffuser (all available online) to see if this helps with anxiety and the panting. If no improvement, I would definitely get in to see your regular veterinarian for a further, more detailed workup. If you had a major panic attack it is very possible that Sushi picked up on your stress and is worried for you. Giving yourself and her some time to settle back down and relax, either by spending it cuddling, watching a soothing TV show, listening to calming music, etc, may help you both settle back down. If she doesn't return to normal, or she shows obvious signs of illness, then a vet visit to rule out any issues is always a good idea.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Storm! I wonder if the medications Storm was put on for the hot spot are causing the panting. Steroids are commonly prescribed for hot spots because it reduces the inflammation, itch and dries them out. Prednisone definitely makes dogs pant! If Storm is on steroids then the panting should resolve as the steroids are tapered. I hope this helps!

I recommend looking into a product such as Adaptil, a natural pheromone that can help some anxious dogs. It sounds like Champ may be feeling anxious or stressed for some reason, but without being able to evaluate him in person and get a much more detailed behavioral history, there's really no way to know what might have caused this. You can try using a DAP pheromone diffuser along with a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure for the next few days to see if this helps.
