My dog is panting heavily after chewing a smoked bone. Should I worry?

It may be from the excitement of getting a chew that gets him worked up. Being overweight can contribute to it. As long as he can calm down and breathing normally and easily when this is gone and this does not occur all the time, then I would not be worried

I am sorry to hear about Xena. I would definitely keep a close eye on her for the next few days and if she has any additional gagging, any vomiting, decreased appetite, change in voice or increased drooling or is pawing at her face, stretching her neck or having trouble breathing she should be seen right away. We do see issues with dogs ingesting bones that can range from bones getting lodged in the throat to causing GI obstruction to splintered bone penetrating the tissues. I personally do not recommend the use of bones for dogs because we see problems too often from giving these as treats.

I would suspect both the heavy running and bone may have upset his stomach. Heavy breathing can be a sign of pain coming from his stomach and intestines, or he may have a lung issue if the breathing is labored and making it hard for him to get in enough oxygen (Blue tongue, gasping for air, congested airway, etc). If he seems to be getting enough oxygen then he is likely just painful and this is likely the cause of his panting. You can try feeding him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days, along with Culturelle (probiotic) over the counter to see if this improves his loose stool and discomfort. Also 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin can help solidify the stools as well. If he does not improve or at any point seems to get worse within the next 24-48 hrs then it’s best to take him to your vet for further care. Usually a short course of antibiotics along with the probiotics and bland diet are all that’s needed for uncomplicated cases of stomach upset. These are vague signs that could indicate several things like anxiety or pain. If there is something they could be making him anxious (rain, thunder, fireworks, new people, etc), then he will calm down afterwards. Just give him some extra attention. If there is nothing you can think that is making him anxious he could be in discomfort. I would have your vet do an exam to make sure he doesn't need any pain medication. I would not give net human pain meds as most of these are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!

You should always be worried when you have a pregnant dog and they are not acting normal. I am glad she seems like she has calmed down now but my recommendation would be to get her checked out by your vet just to be on the safe side is she . Chances are she is fine but I cannot make that call for you over the internet. Best wishes.

Any breathing problems should be treated as an emergency. Panting often indicates pain or anxiety, so she may have some general pain, or abdominal pain if she has eaten something that disagreed with her or swallowed something non-food, like a toy that is causing an obstruction. Left untreated, an obstruction can be life-threatening. I recommend getting her seen by your vet right away. They will do an exam, labwork and/or x-rays as indicated, and, based on these results your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and how best to treat it.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I wouldn't worry about the onions and garlic per se. Please be careful giving dogs too much fat as that can cause pancreatitis and pancreatitis can be severe. I wouldn't advise ever giving straight fat to dogs. Plus he is very young to get foods like that. Signs of pancreatitis are: belly pain, lethargy, vomit and/or diarrhea, not eating. The fat, onions, garlic can cause stomach and intestinal upset as well which would look very similar to pancreatitis. It is hard to say if the panting he is doing is related to what he was fed, panting can be a sign of pain. But puppies can breath fast when they are sleeping. If the panting continues or any of the other above signs occur he should be taken tot the vet. i wish you the best!
