My dog has pancreatitis, shaking and can't sit still. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 8 lbs

My dog currently has pancreatitis. He was doing really well today, but now he can’t sit still and he is shaking. He keeps bouncing from couch to couch or room to room. Then when he sits down he shakes. I don’t know if this is normal or what is going on.

This doesn't sound normal to me. I would be concerned that he is uncomfortable since he can't sit still. I would recommend taking Taz back to the veterinarian for a recheck. Sometimes, pancreatitis requires in hospital treatment. They would put him on IV fluids and offer nothing by mouth. This allows his pancreas to rest. They will also give him some pain medications. Have patience, sometimes pancreatitis takes a while to recover. Some of these dogs will be very sensitive to anything that is high fat, so a strict diet is needed after treatment.

Pmcreatitis is very painful, so the shaking could be interpreted as an expression of pain. Unfortunately Tramadol does not work very well for pain, not as good as in people. The Cerenia works a lot better for visceral pain. Being lethargic is also normal with pancreatitis. Under normal circumstances we hospitalize dogs with pancreatitis, however this is not always possible depending on the area where you live and whether such facilities are available. If Bombon deteriorates or gets much worse you will need to take her to a vet before Monday, or a Pet ER.

Dog with pancreatitis still in pain after 5 days. Is it normal?

You will need to take your dog back to the vet for a recheck. The veterinarian should prescribe pain medicine for your dog. If he has not had an ultrasound exam yet, this may be the time to have one, in order to check out whether he has an abscess or tumor on his pancreas. By now he should not be in pain anymore, especially since his body functions have returned to normal (no vomiting, no diarrhea, and eating and drinking.).

Is it safe to give my dog pancreatitis meds on a liquid diet?

If she is on medications that were prescribed by your veterinarian for treatment of pancreatitis, then yes she should continue to receive her medications as long as she is eating. Pancreatitis is generally a painful condition so it is recommended to ensure that she receives pain control medications while her pancreas improves. Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

Hi, so sorry to hear that Sasha is not feeling well. Pancreatitis and diabetes are bad diseases to have by themselves. If she has both together that is not a good sign. You cannot expect her to be back to normal in such little time. I would not expect her to be back to 100% after only 24-26 hours of treatment. So, yes, it can be normal. If the diabetes is due to the pancreatitis it may resolve once the pancreatitis is under control. With pancreatitis, it is typically caused by them eating something that they were not supposed too. Usually from human food. I agree that changing Shadow's diet to a bland diet and keeping him on antibiotics (not long term) will be beneficial for him. Pancreatitis can be serious and is usually painful. Most dogs do very well on exactly what your vet is doing while more severe cases require intensive treatment and hospitalization. My dog is lethargic, vomiting, shivering, won't eat. Should I worry?

Hi there. While it is not abnormal for Charlie to be lethargic and behave differently when everyone leaves-this is a bit much. I would recommend taking him in to your veterinarian in case something else is going on. Pancreatitis, intoxication, and a few other diseases can start with this presentation. Shivering in dogs is often a pain response (can also be nervousness, cold, etc). If these behaviors continue I recommend taking him in as soon as you can to try to prevent it from getting worse. My dog has pancreatitis. How long until recovery and normal eating?

Pancreatitis is a serious disease and a dog can die from it. So you need to give her time to recuperate. It will take more than two days for her to become healthy. Make sure she is hydrated and feed her only small amounts of the gastrointestinal food, but offer it often. Eventually she will start eating better. If she still is wobbly and not improved by Monday you should take her back to the vet for a recheck.
