My dog had pancreatitis. Should I worry she's not drinking water?

Hershey should be drinking approximately 250 to 300 cc of water /24 hrs. This includes any water you add to his food. Once you measure this amount in a measuring cup or jar, you see that it is not a lot of water. If he drinks about this amount of water he should be fine. If not, add more water to his food.

Hello. If Obie is eating a canned diet, he is actually getting quite a bit of liquid every day. Have you tried offering chicken or beef broths or stocks? Some cats also love to drink running water, so leaving a tap trickling may encourage Obie to drink more. If there is a medical reason he refuses to drink, then he may need to receive subcutaneous fluids ( under the skin a couple of days a week ). Possibly, although my other concerns for increased drinking include kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and diabetes. Weight loss, vomiting or soft stool can also be signs of concern in these conditions. I would ask your vet about running a urine sample and/or some bloodwork to help determine if the increased drinking is a problem. I would also recommend having Brady on wet food (assuming he likes it!) if he is not already as that can help add moisture to his diet. I hope this helps!

Pancreatitis is a serious disease and a dog can die from it. So you need to give her time to recuperate. It will take more than two days for her to become healthy. Make sure she is hydrated and feed her only small amounts of the gastrointestinal food, but offer it often. Eventually she will start eating better. If she still is wobbly and not improved by Monday you should take her back to the vet for a recheck.

Poor puddin, it sounds like she may need to be hospitalized for pain medications and intravenous fluids and medications, force feeding is not appropriate if she is that distressed and she is unlikely to recover without medical intervention. Contact your vet for a recheck and possibly admission

Poor Abby. I am concerned that she is having a different problem than the pancreatitis. My biggest concern is that she may have a inflammed disc in her neck that is cause her a lot of pain and/or some neurological issues. I would have your vet do an exam and see if she needs some anti-inflammatories and pain meds. Your vet will be able to do some spinal X-rays if needed. I typically include pain medication as well as an anti-nausea medication in my treatment plan. Pancreatitis can cause abdominal pain and he may not be eating due to nausea. It is also a good idea to have his cobalamin (vitamin B12) level measured in his blood. If this is cost prohibitive, most veterinarians will give an injection of this vitamin. It can help a lot.
