My dog has pancreatitis and diarrhea. How long until he poops?

It may take 24-48 hours before he poops again, sometimes longer. Given that he is eating and drinking, I would not be too worried just yet. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor guy! Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and belly pain. It is a cause of vomiting and diarrhea but it isn't the only cause. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, IBD, food allergy/intolerance or reaction to eating something outside or a new treat/food/people food. Since he has been low grade vomiting now for 2 days it is best to have him seen soon if it continues. It is encouraging that he is eating. I would be sure you fasted him for 12-24 hours then resume feeding with a very bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Make the meals very small. Only offer small amounts of water. If he is lethargic, won't eat and the vomiting continues even on a low grade scale he should be seen before the weekend. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Sometimes a dog will not "go" for 24 - 48 hours after anti-diarrheal medications have been started. Think of it like this: the system was essentially empty due to the [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/), and if the medication is effective, it will slow down the transit time of food through the GI tract and it will take a couple of days for him to actually need to poop again. As long as he is eating and drinking and feeling good, I would not immediately panic. I do often see dogs recovering from diarrhea go as much as 48 - 72 hours before having a bowel movement. If it's longer than this, or if he's not feeling well, get him rechecked immediately.

It is very normal for dogs to not have a bowel movement for a day or two after diarrhea. Their intestines are empty. I would continue with the rice and chicken until Roger has nice solid poop and then you can start adding some of his normal food to the rice and chicken for another day before giving only his regular food. Be sure that she is on medication for diarrhea (metronidazole or tylosin). If she isn't on medication for diarrhea because this is a new symptom, call your Vet when they open to see if you can pick up medication for the diarrhea. Often, bland foods that are easy to digest are recommended, canned food such as Hills I/D or Proplan EN are often recommended. If he has any more vomitting (especially after medications), straining or is painful/uncomfortable I do recommend having him evaluated or hospitalized overnight. It can take anywhere from 6-20 hours or so for food to move through the digestive tract, a lot depends on what food was ingested. If he has any further signs, additional diagnostics such as an ultrasound or contrast study may be recommended to further rule out GI obstruction or other disease. If Buzz has not had a bowel movement in 3 days, this is likely because his intestines are still normalizing stool and developing a healthy stool after the diarrhea. It can take time for stool to return to normal after having diarrhea. Up to 5 days is typically the average I see before normal stool resumes after multiple episodes of diarrhea. If he is not actively trying to defecate with nothing coming out, it is likely that is is not constipated and just needs more time for the stool to be re-established. You can try and add pumpkin (canned) to the diet and see if this helps establish normal bowel movements. I would add 2tbsp of canned pumpkin to each meal. I hope this helps!
