My Jack Russell has a painless lump on her rib cage. What could it be?

This could be a bruise from and injury, a cyst, an insect bite or an abscess. As long as it's not painful, red or getting bigger then I would just keep an eye on it. I expect it will get smaller daily and should be gone in a few days to a week. If it doesn't get smaller or changes then a veterinary exam is recommended. This lump needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take Jsune to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the growth and send it to the lab for analysis. when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. Based on the picture, this affected red area looks either like an abscess (pocket of infection) or a mass of unknown origin under the skin. Either way, it is inflamed and irritated, as well as possibly infected. I would highly recommend to have it evaluated by your regular veterinarian as soon as you can get an appt. If you dog can lick at the area please either put a long shirt on him or obtain an Ecollar to prevent him from licking until a doctor can evaluate this problem.

This could be a cyst or a benign tumor. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. It's difficult to know for certain without being able to feel in person, but this could be a tooth root abscess (even though she is still eating), or it could be some kind of tumor or growth. There are also lymph nodes in this area and it is possible that this is an enlarged lymph node. I would definitely recommend seeing your veterinarian so they can determine what this might be.

Any lumps/bumps that you notice on your dog should be checked out by your vet. Lumps can be any of these things: * abscess (infection) * cyst * cancer (benign or malignant) * wart * injection site reaction * hernia There is no way I can tell you what it is just based on your description but I highly doubt it is from the rabies vaccination. That vaccine is standardly given by all veterinarians in the outside of the right hind leg (thigh area). So, being that it is near the rib cage and not seemingly bothering her I would guess it to be a cyst but again, I don't know for sure. I suggest you take her to your vet to have it checked when you can get an appointment. It is not an emergency.
