My dog has a painful rash on her belly and legs after hunting. What can I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer (duplicate) | Female | spayed | 11 months old

Our gsp went bird hunting for the first time and came home with a rash on her lower belly and down the inside of her legs. It seems to be painful for her to lay down. She is 11 months old and is up to date on all of her shots. What can I do for her?

Poor Bailey! It sounds like she may have been allergic to something out in the field, or she may have gotten into poison ivy or poison oak if these are a problem where you live. You can try bathing her in hydrocortisone dog shampoo to help soothe the irritation, or you could use a topical steroid spray labeled for dogs on the affected area. If this doesn't help, or if the rash does not resolve within the next 2-3 days, I would recommend having her examined by a vet - she may need prescription medication such as a steroid or antibiotic to treat the problem.
