My dog has a painful lump on his paw pad. How can I help it heal?

It is definitely concerning that the lump has increased in size so quickly, as older dogs are typically more likely to develop cancers. The lump can also be an infection or cyst. I recommend having this seen by a vet as soon as possible - they can take a small sample from the growth to determine exactly what it is and recommend the appropriate treatment. I hope all is well!

It does not really look like a healed part of the stopper pad, so it could be a skin growth. If Tonny keeps licking the area you definitely should take him to your local vets for an appointment. For now, please use a head cone or bandage up the leg for 24hrs to stop him from nibbling on the leg as this could introduce skin inflammation and infection.

It would be hard to tell what is going on with Harry without an exam, but if he is very painful it is best to have the spot looked at by a vet. Abscesses, tumors, allergic reactions and blisters can all cause swelling that may be painful. Abscesses (infections) tend to also be hot to the touch and may ooze discolored debris. Having your vet take a look is best, and they can recommend draining it or treating with medication to help get Harry feeling better.

Common tumors in this region include melanomas, squamous cell carcinomas, mast cell tumors and soft tissue sarcomas, among others. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Any lumps/bumps that you notice on your dog should be checked out by your vet. Lumps can be any of these things: * abscess (infection) * cyst * cancer (benign or malignant) * wart There is no way I can tell you for sure what it is just based on your description or by looking at a photo but I have a suspicion that this may be a histiocytoma (benign tumor). Hello. This looks like a small cyst, nothing too worrisome. It may pop & if it does, just clean the area with a good skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ). A warm compress or soaking the foot in warm water for 10 minutes 2-3 times per day may bring things to a head sooner, but this does not appear to be at all dangerous. I don't think you need to have him evaluated tonight but I would certainly have him checked tomorrow by his veterinarian. This appears to be a growth coming off of one of the toe pads. Growths typically can be solid or fluid filled. They can be tumors (benign, not cancer or malignant, cancer), cysts (fluid filled or sebaceous material filled), granulomas which are caused by inflammation and contain inflammatory cells, or other things. Your vet will evaluate the growth and then advise a fine needle aspirate, biopsy, or full excision of the growth with histopathological exam by a pathologist to determine what the mass is, how to further treat it, and what the prognosis long term will be. Again, I think you can wait tonight but I would get Bear looked at first thing tomorrow morning. If you have an Elizabethan collar or can buy one tonight, I would advise that to prevent him from licking it further. Good luck with Bear.
