Why does my dog have a painful lump on his hip he keeps licking?

This can be related to a skin infection, growth (slightly more likely if Louie is a little older), or a bug bite. A veterinary exam can determine the definitive cause, and would be required for prescription antibiotics. In the meantime, you can carefully use an electric clipper to clear hair from the area if you feel comfortable. You can also get Louie an e-collar or “cone” to prevent him from continuing to lick the area and cause further trauma. A mild pet shampoo can also be used to keep the area clean. That looks like a growth of some kind, and it's clearly bothering him if he keeps licking at it. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like it could be a sebaceous cyst that got infected and ruptured. These are benign but sometimes they do keep opening and become bothersome to the pet until you surgically remove them. That being said, in a dog of this age, I always recommend seeing your vet for a closer inspection and a needle aspirate if needed- just to make sure it’s something benign. For now, I recommend an E-collar for Hank so that he can lick/chew at it. Then clean the wound with some hydrogen peroxide. Best wishes to you and Hank!

The skin looks swollen and is seems to be getting infected. I would suggest you take him to the vet for an exam as it is impossible for me to "diagnose" him over the internet. If this spray doesn't make him stop licking it you will need to get him a cone collar. If your dog is an older dog, she may be suffering from pain in the hips, such as arthritis, or if younger, hip dysplasia or other painful condition. Dogs usually lick when something bothers them, be it pruritus (itching) or pain. I strongly suggest you take her to your veterinarian for an exam, possibly x-rays, as pain can be treated with dog-specific NSAIDs. If the hips are healthy then your vet can examine the skin and address that.

However, I would recommend this get checked out with Hershey's veterinarian soon. The bump may be allergy related or could be an abscess, swelling due to fracture of the digit, or could be an mass/tumor. Until you can get Hershey seen by his veterinarian, I would recommend Epsom salt water baths for the paw 2-3 times daily for 5-10 mins to help reduce swelling.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This looks to be a histiocytoma tumor which is a benign tumor commonly found on the limbs and face of dogs. It is a benign tumor that usually will regress on its own within a few weeks/months with no treatment. Of course, I am just guessing.
