My dog has a painful bump inside his mouth. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 85 lbs

Hello, my dog is a 2.5yr old male German Shepherd and has this bump on the inside of his mouth. It’s causing him a lot of pain. He won’t let me touch his mouth or nose. I just need some advice

Poor guy. This swelling looks quite irritating indeed. It could be a blister since he is so young and due to the way it looks. I would recommend offering soft food only to Bryan Kraber to prevent further irritation of the area. Also a water additive can be used to help flush his mouth and keep the area from getting infected. If he still seems uncomfortable by tomorrow, then I would schedule a vet appt to have this treated with pet friendly pain medication. Over the counter pain medicine should be avoided in pets due to the high risk of causing acute kidney/liver failure, so its best to consult with your vet if needed.

This could be a ringworm lesion(fungal disease), a vitiligo lesion (where the pigment of the skin is lost), or a wart or other tumor. This will need to be examined in a hands-on matter, the skin needs to be palpated, a possible skin scrape or brush sample taken or a fine needle aspirate, in order to properly diagnose this condition. Once a diagnosis is made it will be clear whether treatment is necessary or not and if so, what kind of treatment. Please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam.

My dog has a firm, swollen spot on his muzzle. What could it be?

Hi. That is definitely some severe swelling. Due to its location and presentation, I would be very concerned about a tooth root abscess. These can occur even if the crown of the tooth appears normal. It takes an x-ray to fully diagnose it. Other possible causes of swelling like this in a young dog could include a bite from insect or spider, injury, trauma, or infection. I recommend getting him to your veterinarian to be checked out tomorrow.

My dog has a small hard white bump on his lip. Should I see a vet?

Based on the appearance of this lesion and Baldrick's young age, I would guess that it's most likely either an epulis (https://www.petcoach.co/article/epulis-a-common-oral-tumor/) or an oral papilloma. The challenge with any lump or bump is that the only surefire way to diagnose the issue is with a biopsy. Both of these lesions are benign, but oral papillomas are contagious to other dog due to their viral origin and epulides can grow significantly if left in place. While this issue certainly isn't an emergency by any stretch of the imagination, I still think it's worth taking Baldrick to his vet in the coming weeks to have it checked out. My dog has a large, pink, swollen gum bump. What should I do?

Poor girl. This is unfortunately an oral mass and should be tested by your vet soon to determine if this is cancerous or benign (non-cancerous). Due to Sugar's age and breed there is unfortunately a higher risk of cancer, but we should know for sure after it is tested. It is good that it is the same color as the rest of her skin/gums, so that is promising. I hope that Sugar's test results come back favorable after your vet visit. Best wishes and take care!

My dog has a mouth bump after kennel stay. Is it from the fence?

It looks like it could have been from the same type of issue of trying to push through the fence. It does look particularly infected or severely inflamed. You can monitor it for a few days. If it does not improve on its own, have him evaluated by your veterinarian to ensure there is not an underlying infectious cause that would warrant the use of antibiotics. I think Emmitt is likely to be just fine. Good luck!

Dog has a red bump, swollen face, and isn't eating. What's wrong?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an infection. I do not recommend you give him those pills as they are unlikely to help. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!
