What OTC cream can I use for my dog's crusty skin and hair loss?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 60 lbs

is there any steroid cream type that I can use on my dog? He has crusty, flaky inflamed spots all over that cause hair loss. I'm looking for an over the counter steroid cream, please. ... no Vet prescribed meds!

Human products can be used but you’ll need to keep him in a cone so he doesn’t lick the medication. Veterinary products are recommended since they are designed for pets. They have several over the counter medications at PetCo that will be effective to treat his spots. I recommend bathing him first in a medicated shampoo then using a hotspot type medication on the sores. If they aren’t healing or getting worse then please take him in for an exam and treatment.
