What OTC cream can I use for my dog's crusty skin and hair loss?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If this is associated with itchiness, this may be due to skin allergies. There are medications such as Apoquel and prednisone which may help to decrease the itch. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello. If his skin is damaged, then you want to use an antibacterial shampoo until the lesions heal. Anything with Benzoyl Peroxide or Chlorhexidine will work well. You will need to probably bathe him every few days, so alternate with a shampoo that has anti-itch properties such as Pramoxine or 1% hydrocortisone. The key to using any medicated shampoo is to make sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Finally, you should use a skin barrier preparation that contains ceramides. Allerderm Spot-on by Virbac & Dermoscent Essential 6 Spot-on are 2 highly rated products. Ueing these products along with diet & appropriate medications should make Mumble much more comfortable. Poor guy. Based on the patchy areas of hair loss, this may be demodex. YOu will need to visit your vet to have him tested and then treated with prescription medication. There is no over the counter oral medication for demodex unfortunately. There may be some shampoos available at your local petstore. but topicals alone wont' resolve demodex in dogs. Another possible cause for these lesions is allergic dermatitis. I hope that Spade's skin issue resolves soon! Best wishes and take care.

This is generally good in these type of scenarios. Fish oil is a supplement that may also prove beneficial. Good luck!

Hi and thanks for your post! I would recommend getting a diagnosis first from her veterinarian before using any over the counter medications or creams. Hair loss around the eyes may be due to a fungal infection, bacterial infection, or mites. Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with a fungal culture and a skin scraping. I would recommend Baby Girl visit her vet soon to have the possibilities above ruled out so a diagnosis can be made and she can receive the most appropriate treatment from her veterinarian. Some skin creams can be irritating to the skin or may make matters worse depending on what the underlying cause is, so getting a prescription medication from her vet is recommended. If you are unable to get him in to be seen by the veterinarian, I would recommend the below products, which can all be found online quite easily. Steroids are the most commonly used medications for severe skin allergies so I assume your dog gets steroids injection.
