Dog allergies & hotspots: At-home care for itchy skin infections?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Based on the picture, it does appear that this could be a hot spot. I typically recommend using products that soothe and treat infection. What I would recommend would be Well & Good Hydrocortisone spray (at Petco) and Miconahex + Triz spray and apply both of these twice daily until resolved. If there is no improvement within 7 days, I would recommend taking your dog in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hello. If his skin is damaged, then you want to use an antibacterial shampoo until the lesions heal. Anything with Benzoyl Peroxide or Chlorhexidine will work well. You will need to probably bathe him every few days, so alternate with a shampoo that has anti-itch properties such as Pramoxine or 1% hydrocortisone. The key to using any medicated shampoo is to make sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Finally, you should use a skin barrier preparation that contains ceramides. Allerderm Spot-on by Virbac & Dermoscent Essential 6 Spot-on are 2 highly rated products. Ueing these products along with diet & appropriate medications should make Mumble much more comfortable. The photos you have provided are a bit blurry but I can tell that the skin is thickened and irritated. From your description, it sounds as though Cleo is battling a skin infection that could be secondary to a chronic allergy. Prednisone will help with the symptoms of the allergy but unfortunately long term use will lead to abnormal clinical signs from the steroids. I would recommend treating Cleo with oral antibiotics, antifungals alongside topical therapy. She may also be dealing with a condition known as Atopic Dermatitis, in which case will need specific treatment such as Atopica or Cytopoint. I would recommend using the below recommended products and discussing additional oral treatments with your vet other than steroids. For relief of the itching / discomfort, you can use a product called Sentry Hydrocortisone spray which can be found at Petco. I also like using Pramosoothe spray, which can be found online. These products can be applied 2-3 times per day to help with the relief. I would try and find out why Rocco is so prone to the allergies though to help with the overall problem rather than masking the symptoms of the problem. If this is a year round issue, he may have a disease called Atopic Dermatitis, which can be treated but can be difficult and expensive to manage. Thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry Deuce is having problems. From the looks of this picture, this is not likely to heal without oral and topical medications. The sooner he sees a vet the more more likely it will resolve quickly. These skin infections are often painful and tend to have fungal and bacterial populations. In the meantime keep it dry. Please don't use any alcohol or vinegar based treatments as these are very painful. A shampoo with Chlorhexidine may be helpful if used daily, but make sure to completely dry him after washing. If this is on his neck, remove (and disinfect) any collars or harnesses that may rub him. Don't put back on until completely healed. I completely understand that skin issues can be expensive, expecially in a larger dog, but in the long run a vet visit early in the course of illness tends to be cheaper than home remedies and a visit later. In general, a sensitive skin diet tends to help lessen the number of flare ups.
