Dog losing hair in patches. Is it demodex? Any over-the-counter help?

Use an oatmeal type bath. This will help to moisturize the skin. You may also ask your veterinarian about using a special prescription shampoo which can help to clear out the pores and may be somewhat effective against the mites (though you need to continue your current treatment). Hi and thanks for your post. Demodex mite infection can be occur in younger dogs and may spontaneously resolve as their immune system becomes more mature. Demodex mange is not typically itchy but sarcoptic mange is. The area of hair loss around the eye in the picture does look suspicious of demodex mange but you will want to get this confirmed with your veterinarian first. A skin test in needed to accurately diagnosis demodex manage in dogs. If it is demodex, unfortunately, there is nothing over the counter at tractor supply you can purchase for this. You veterinarian may give you a prescription medication for the mange if necessary. Either types of manage (demodex or sarcoptic) typically is not fatal unless there is a more serious underlying condition at play. Both types are treatable.

It probably is demodectic mange. I suggest you talk to your vet about putting him on Nexgard or Bravecto. Both are oral flea tablets that coincidentally also treat demodex. Easy to do and relatively inexpensive. They are prescription drugs though so you need to get them from your vet. So much easier than all the things you are doing and it works better. Hope this helps. Human products can be used but you’ll need to keep him in a cone so he doesn’t lick the medication. Veterinary products are recommended since they are designed for pets. They have several over the counter medications at PetCo that will be effective to treat his spots. I recommend bathing him first in a medicated shampoo then using a hotspot type medication on the sores. If they aren’t healing or getting worse then please take him in for an exam and treatment. Poor girl. I would highly recommend having her tested for demodexx mites, hypothyroidism, and a fungal infection. Either of these can cause these symptoms, but they can also all be treated with relatively good success. Best of luck to you at the vet. Best wishes and take care.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jack. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. Skin tests will likely need to be performed. Demodex is a mite that lives normally in the hair follicles of dogs. Puppies can experience an overgrowth. This is common in his breed. The veterinarian can diagnose this condition with a procedure known as a skin scrapes. Of course, there can be other conditions affecting his skin. In the meantime, I recommend bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe the skin. Place an E-collar on him if he is licking or biting the areas. I hope this information helps!

Poor guy. There are really only 2 types of mites that we see in veterinary medicine- Scabies and Demodexx mites. Scabies (a type ofmite) is infectious to people so if you yourself are not itching then you can kind of rule that one out. The other mite, Demodexx isn't infectious to people or other pets, and nowadays it can be treated with oral flea preventatives such as Bravecto, Nexgard or Simparica + a medicated topical shampoo through your vet. I would recommend just starting Baileys' on one of these to cover any kind of mite issue. Then I would suggest getting Bailey on an oral antibiotic to clear up the skin infection that is present. The ears look to be infected as well. This will require a topical ear medication and cleaner from your vet to resolve. Skin allergy testing is not commoonly used anymore due to the poor overall response to allergy immunotherapy shots. THe most common allergy medication used nowadays is Apoquel. I would ask your vet about this as well, especially if mites are not the underlying problem, which can be easily confirmed or denied with a simple skin scraping test done through your vet.
