My dog listens to me, but not others. How to get consistent behavior?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 30 days old | 35 lbs

My dog does really well with treat training and positive reinforcement etc. He knows his basic commands, he’s leash crate and potty trained. He’s very well behaved.. when it’s just me and him. If anybody else is with us, or he’s alone with somebody else, he seems to forget what any commands mean, he doesn’t listen, he pulls on his leash, he jumps all over, it’s like he’s a completely different dog that was never trained at all. Why might this be and what can I do to get him to alway behave well?

Dogs are situational learners and just because he behaves for you does not mean he will behave for others. The only thing you can do is continue your own training and work with anyone else who has contact with him to train him as well. That’s the only way he will learn to behave for others is if they make him. If they do the same things you do, it will be easier for Groot to understand. Each new person represents a new situation to Groot as well so they all must do it. It does usually get easier as he gets older.
