My dog hasn't pooped all day and isn't eating. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 13 days old | 13 lbs

Lioh has not been pooping all day today. He has been peeing normal but has not pooped since last night and it is already 6pm. I also noticed he had not really ate his food today. What can I do?

I'm sorry Lioh has been having trouble! It's possible that he may be constipated. You can offer him some canned pumpkin to see if that helps, but if he's not producing any stool by tomorrow or not eating he should see your vet.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would not be too concerned by this as sometimes dogs can go an entire day without defeating. I would add 1 tbsp of canned pumpkin to the food and see if this helps normalize the stool if it continues. If this continues I would recommend changing to a different food and see if this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can be normal if for example he had not eaten in several days before he restarted eating or he is or he was on medications for diarrhea which can then result in constipation in some cases. I recommend you add 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin to his meals which can help with mild cases of constipation. Good luck and have a good one!

If he is otherwise acting normally (no vomiting, normal appetite, energy normal, no pain) you can try adding a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to his food twice a day, or giving him some cat hairball remedy (such as laxatone). If this doesn't resolve the isssue within 24 hours or he develops any of the symptoms I mentioned before, he will need to see his veterinarian. My puppy is constipated, not eating, and whining. What should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lily. There are two common causes for a dog struggling to defecate. The first is constipation which I suspect you are hoping to remedy by adding the pumpkin to her diet. This can be helpful, but she needs to eat it. With constipation, the dog can become so uncomfortable that she will refuse to eat. The second common is scenario is actually diarrhea. The dog can strain to pass very small amounts of liquid stool. It is easy to miss and most people will assume they are not defecating at all. The treatment options are different for the two causes. Since she is refusing food, she is not feeling well. She will need to see her veterinarian. In the meantime, continue to give her water so that she does not become dehydrated. I hope this information helps!

My puppy hasn't pooped in 1.5 days. Is it constipated? What to do?

Hi there and thanks for your post! Dogs should defecate at least once every day. If it has been 1 and 1/2 days since Luna's last bowel movement but is still eating and drinking normally, she may be a little constipated. You can try adding a tablespoon or two of plain canned pumpkin to her food twice daily for an extra fiber boost to help move things along. If that doesn't help, I would recommend Luna sees her veterinarian to rule out other causes of constipation such as a parasitic infection or other cause. It could be there is something wrong. Give Lilo a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) with her food to see if that helps. Also try feeding her canned food and adding water to it. If it does not, have her seen by a vet in the morning. Best of luck.

I wouldn't be too concerned just yet. Try adding a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) to Yoyo's food to see if that helps. My dog didn't poop, is constipated, and has red blood in stool. Help?

It's not normal to have blood in the stool, and if Lola didn't go at all yesterday and her stool is currently hard, it could be that she has constipation. Constipation can be caused by anal sac impaction, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. I recommend giving her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps. If she is still constipated in 24-48 hours, she will need to see a vet as she will likely need a laxative or an enema. Your vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation as well.
