My dog isn't pooping after being sick. When to switch his food?

You can offer Charlie some canned pumpkin and add plenty of water to his food to help with the constipation. There are no safe over the counter enemas for dogs so please have Charlie examined by your veterinarian if he doesn't have a bowel movement soon.

It is very normal for dogs to not have a bowel movement for a day or two after diarrhea. Their intestines are empty. I would continue with the rice and chicken until Roger has nice solid poop and then you can start adding some of his normal food to the rice and chicken for another day before giving only his regular food. As long as Benny isn't straining or attempting to defecate without producing stool I wouldn't worry about lack of defecation. Sometimes after diarrhea resolves things can slow down through the gastrointestinal tract and it can take several days to resume a normal frequency of defecation. Sometimes adding fiber to the diet such as canned pumpkin can help with diarrhea, but since Benny hasn't had diarrhea in the past 24 hours I would simply continue the chicken and rice and begin a gradual transition to his usual diet in a day or two. If he goes more than three days without defecating I'd recommend seeing your vet.

I would fast Charlie for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. You can also add canned pumpkin to help with retaining moisture in the feces and so soften them. The blood is likely caused by pushing hard poop scratching on the surface of the rectum. Make sure he drinks enough water. Should the constipation not improve within the next two or three days then you need to see your veterinarian for an exam and an enema.

Congratulations on bringing Charlie into your family! Certainly the new environment could be causing the condition. Take Charlie for a long walk twice a day. Walking can help to regulate the bowel movement. If he still does not have a bowel movement after three days he should see the veterinarian to check for constipation. His poop is bright yellow b/c of his current diet (just rice and cottage cheese). He should have some protein in there, so I would suggest adding chicken or ground turkey. Also as long as he is not straining to poop, there is no cause for concern for the fewer stools, especially since he isn't eating anything with much substance. As long as he is acting normal, there is no major cause for concern here. Slowly transition him back to his normal diet once your vet says he is good to do so, and his stools should return to normal.
