My dog won't feed her puppies. Could she be too young to be a mother?

I'm so sorry that one of your puppies has died! It does sound like Jacky isn't a good mother if she isn't feeding them or licking them, and that could be due to her young age. It's never recommended to breed a female dog on her first heat because she won't be emotionally or physically mature enough to care for them properly as you are seeing with Jacky. Some dogs are also just poor mothers naturally, and that could be the case as well with her. You are going to have to raise these puppies yourself if you want them to have the best chance to survive, but please keep in mind that newborn puppies are very fragile. As for Jacky, I would be quite concerned she would repeat this behavior with future litters, so I would recommend having her spayed before her next heat. I would take her to the vet for an examination because she sounds very unwell and there coukd be a medical reason why she isnt bonding with the pups. You shouldnt force her to feed them whilst you dont know what is wrong as it could make her sicker. Common problems in bitches after whelping are mastitis in the teats, metritis in the womb, hypocalcemia or electrolyte imbalances. I would get her to a vet as soon as you can.

They are too young to be weaned from milk, you will need to buy puppy replacer milk at the pet shop. there could be many reasons for the mother to stop feeding her pups, the most common would be mammary gland inflammation.

Please have her assessed by an emergency vet as soon as possible - it looks like she may have painful inflammation and infection known as mastitis which can release toxins both into the milk and into her bloodstream. You will need to handfeed the puppies also (a mixture of mousse textured, high calorie recovery food and warm water or canned puppy food should be ok at 3 weeks)

If you cannot bring the puppies inside, I would suggest that you take them to an animal shelter. They need their mom for more than just food. They need her warmth and comfort, too, in order to have healthy psychological growth. Arya was too young, at nine months of age, to have a litter, and her maternal instincts have not kicked in yet. Somehow, you'll have to provide for these puppies what she is not willing to.

In the circumstances where the mother dog won't feed the puppies you can either try to make Bella lie down and attach the puppies to her nipples (check first that she is producing milk), or if she is refusing the puppies all together you will need to feed and nurse them yourself with a bottle. This involves bottle feeding a puppy replacer (not just milk or 'puppy milk') as well as wiping their penis/vagina and anus so that they will pee and poop. I recommend a visit with the vet for both mom and babies to make sure Bella isn't sick, and to check on the puppies and be shown how to properly bottle feed. Best of luck with Bella and the puppies!

The puppy may generally be weak, have a birth defect or did not develop properly. This is actually why dogs have many puppies, as there may always be one that will not do well and possibly die. I suggest you take the whole litter and mother to your veterinarian for an exam. There are so many possible causes for this that is not possible to determine the cause from your description and without a hands-on exam.
