My dog won't eat or drink, has dark urine & dry poop. What's wrong?

Poor Murphy! I'm sorry to hear that he's having this problem. He may be constipated due to hard, dry stool; or, he may have some type of blockage in his colon causing him to be unable to poop. Since he is also not eating or drinking, I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet today to be seen rather than attempting any kind of home remedies for this problem. The veterinarian there can do a rectal exam to help determine what the problem is, and can get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Fido is not feeling well. Dark colored urine is an indication of dehydration. Not eating can be a sign of almost anything. Not eating for that long is very worriesome. You need to get him to a vet for an exam and some treatment. I don't think worms or the heat is the issue. I found a few veterinary hospitals in your area. I suggest you get him to one of them for an exam. Remember, at 10 years of age, he is about 60 years old in "human years". Chronic vomiting, has multiple causes but may cause an electrolyte imbalance which could account for the symptoms you are seeing. If he is drinking more water than usual, he should be seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork to rule out kidney disease, diabetes or other GI issues. When a pet is vomiting, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If he won't eat, serve the food warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not or if the appetite does not return, then you will need to see your veterinarian.

Poor girl. Unfortunately her symptoms are very non-specific towards one disease process or another. They are very vague indeed. It sounds like she is having decreased appetite and lethargy. I would have her examined by your vet to gather more clues about her condition. Her vitals need to be checked and she may need additional testing like a fecal exam or bloodwork to get to the underlying problem. She could have a number of things going on including an infection or a congenital defect. I do hope that your puppy is going to be ok moving forward. Best of luck and take care.

I am sorry to hear that Rydor is so gravely ill. This sounds serious. I would highly recommend getting Rydor seen by a vet at this point because he is beyond the time frame that is ok to wait and see how things will work out. Typically any illness to this degree that goes beyond 24 hrs or so should be seen and medically treated because conservative treatments at home are likely to fail and will only result in a prolonging of vital treatment that he needs in order to get well. I am really concerned about a possible foreign body obstruction, bacterial infection, or organ malfunction. Rydor needs to be seen as soon as possible for a thorough exam, bloodwork analysis to diagnose his condition, and medications to help stabilize him. Until you can get him in you can try offering him small amounts of Pedialyte and Ensure using a syringe or small turkey baster. This can help prevent any further dehydration and hopefully provide some small nutritional support for him until he can be seen and properly treated. I sincerely hope for his speedy recovery from his underlying illness.

Refusing food can be caused by a huge number of things. Urine gets much darker when a patient is dehydrated. So, since Cody is not eating or drinking normally, we would expect his urine to be darker than normal. Dehydration alone can make a dog nauseous and refuse to eat. Dehydration can also make a number of conditions worse. I would recommend having your vet examine Cody ASAP to see if they can figure out what is causing Cody not to eat. They may need to check some blood work to figure that out. Depending on what they find, at the very least, they will be able to give him fluids to correct his dehydration which will make him feel better and maybe give him anti-nausea medication which may allow him to start eating again. This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection. Urine could be more concentrated than normal (given the inappetence and the diarrhoea causing mild dehydration). The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food (a bland diet would be best- boiled chicken and rice). A check up is needed if inappetence last for more than 24hours.
