My dog had diarrhea, now no poop for days on bland diet. Is this normal?

Hey whats wrong? My dog got diarrhea last tuesday but its been 3 days since she never poop since i introduce her to the bland diet, rice with boiled chicken breast meat without skin.

If Agua had diarrhea and now has not defecated for a few days this can be completely normal. I would recommend if she is not straining or acting abnormally to monitor her. She was completely empty and now basically we are waiting for the food to go through her system. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Poor girl! I am so glad she is starting to feel better. Since she was having diarrhea, sometimes it can take a few days to build up another solid bowel movement since she probably "emptied" out while being sick. I would continue the small frequent meals of chicken and rice. If she doesn't continue to improve or worsens then I would take her to your vet for an exam and medications. Also when she is back to normal slowly transition her back to her regular food from the chicken and rice over a 5-7 day period. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zeke. If he is eating, drinking, no longer vomiting and has lots of energy, then it sounds like he is doing well. After an episode of gastrointestinal upset, GI transit time can be altered. It can take several days of eating normally before a bowel movement will pass. This is typically normal. I suspect that he will defecate today or tomorrow at the latest. If he stops eating, appears bloated or uncomfortable, then he will need to see his veterinarian again. I hope this information helps!

It is not uncommon for dogs to go several days between bowel movements while eating a bland diet after a period of diarrhea. Bland diets of boiled chicken and rice generate less "waste" and diarrhea generally leaves a relatively empty GI tract, causing the delay between normal bowel movements. Since Noya has not had further diarrhea, you can start to mix her normal dog food with the chicken and rice over another 5-7 days. As her normal diet is reintroduced, her stool frequency will likely return to normal.

Dogs are scavengers so she may have gotten into something that upset her stomach. As long as she’s eating and acting normal she should recover without treatment. You can give boiled chicken and rice to settle her stomach and help firm up the stool. If the vomiting and diarrhea continue and she’s lethargic or not eating at all then please bring her in right away for an exam and treatment. I am very sorry to hear that Lelani has been so unwell. It sounds as though she is on a great treatment Plan. It can be normal for some constipation to follow a gastrointestinal upset. I would continue to monitor her at home for a few hours. If by the end of the day she still hasn't had a bowel movement, or if she seems in pain or lethargic I Would take her back into the veterinarian. The concern is for a foegein body obstruction. But because she seems happy and active it is less likely.

My dog had diarrhea, now soft poop & straining on bland diet?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diarrhea resolving can take a few days, so it is normal that it isn't as solid as normal. The straining however isn't normal. I would recommend checking to make sure around her anus looks ok (no bleeding or wounds), and if you can feel under her anus at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions, does it feel like hard marbles are under the skin. If this is the case she could have full anal glands which can be making her uncomfortable in her back end. This would require a vet visit to empty them before they burst. Otherwise, as long as she is eating/playing, I would just monitor her to see if the behaviour continues. If she is still straining tomorrow I would take Riley to the vet to make sure she isn't constipated, but it might just be a one-off episode. If her next poop is normal without straining then I wouldn't worry about it. Best of luck with Riley!

Dog not pooping 2 days after bloody diarrhea & meds. Is it normal?

Sometimes a dog will not "go" for 24 - 48 hours after anti-diarrheal medications have been started. Think of it like this: the system was essentially empty due to the [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/), and if the medication is effective, it will slow down the transit time of food through the GI tract and it will take a couple of days for him to actually need to poop again. As long as he is eating and drinking and feeling good, I would not immediately panic. I do often see dogs recovering from diarrhea go as much as 48 - 72 hours before having a bowel movement. If it's longer than this, or if he's not feeling well, get him rechecked immediately.

Typically after dogs have diarrhea they will not defecate for a few days. If he is straining to go or he still has diarrhea I would recommend a veterinarian. It is never a bad idea to take Moko in to have the veterinarian perform a rectal and make sure there is no cause for concern but it is fine to wait another day. Your veterinarian can check his stool sample for intestinal parasites, dispense a prescription bland diet and even medication to help with his diarrhea. It is actually normal for them to have this pause in the regular bowel movement cycle after a bad case of diarrhea. With bad diarrhea they tend to empty their bowels and when it abruptly gets better it can take a couple of days before the gut is functioning regularly again. My dog had diarrhea, now constipated. When will his stool normalize?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If Buzz has not had a bowel movement in 3 days, this is likely because his intestines are still normalizing stool and developing a healthy stool after the diarrhea. It can take time for stool to return to normal after having diarrhea. Up to 5 days is typically the average I see before normal stool resumes after multiple episodes of diarrhea. If he is not actively trying to defecate with nothing coming out, it is likely that is is not constipated and just needs more time for the stool to be re-established. You can try and add pumpkin (canned) to the diet and see if this helps establish normal bowel movements. I would add 2tbsp of canned pumpkin to each meal. I hope this helps!
