My dog cries when alone. Will neutering help his separation anxiety?

Alfie being intact will not affect if he has separation anxiety but there is no reason why they wouldn't want to castrate him. I would discuss neutering him with another veterinarian if your veterinarian will not. Not all veterinary clinics perform chemical castration so I would discuss this with a veterinarian in your area if you would rather do this procedure. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Dodger! It sounds as though Dodger has separation anxiety. I would leave a radio or the TV on for sound and consider anti-anxiety medications. Long term medications like Prozac or clomicalm are probably best and you can combine it with a short acting medication for the short term. Using your mother in law is also a good idea or if he likes other dogs taking him to doggie day care a few times per week may help. Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and certain testicular tumors can be prevented by neutering dogs. However, dogs can also live happy and normal lives intact. Behavioral problems such as territorial aggression and marking may be reduced by neutering dogs as well. Once neutered, Dante will not behave more like a female, this is a misconception and does not happen. He may become more calm and not as hyper or aggressive once he is neutered and this is due to the reduction in circulating hormones following removal of the testicles. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You’ve already named a few of the problems. Neutering probably won’t help the energy level but may help with the dominance actions. Anxiety is huge and often requires anti-anxiety medication and always requires some form of training. In some instances, training will not be effective until you start some sort of medication so I recommend speaking to your vet. Finally, even though you do much more than many owners in terms of exercise (great work!), it still may not be enough for Stitch, depending on his breed and demeanor. Consider dog parks (once neutered), having him run along a bicycle, etc. Finally, give it time. Many breeds do not settle down until 2-3 years of age, but most eventually do settle down. It sounds like Bongo has some generalized anxiety issues as well as some aggression issues. You have already done some good things to help get this behavior in control. Neutering will definitely help even though you may not see the effects of immediately. Trazodone is a great drug but works mainly for sedation and not as much to relieve overall anxiety. I would recommend speaking with your vet about starting Bongo on an anti-anxiety medication like Prozac. This may help him as well. I would also recommend working with Bongo on routine/common commands and exercising him frequently. Both of these things will help him feel more relaxed and secure. I hope this helps. Hi, neutering might not be the answer as some dogs get even more aggressive after neutering. I would recommend to find an association that will take him over and is able to work on his behaviour prior to rehoming. Unfortunately it takes a lot of money and time to do this on your own and your risk of getting bitten in the meantime is high. Hopefully you will find a solution that it’s helpful for everyone.
