Is my dog's neuter incision healing normally? When can he be groomed?

When an adult dog is neutered, there is a very high rate of swelling in the scrotum unless the dog is kept very quiet. If he is just too energetic, you may need to request a sedative from his veterinarian. The incision site has mild swelling, but appears to be healing. Be sure to keep him from licking. Hello. Yes, this area can be sensitive for 1-2 weeks. Even though the skin incision is healing, deeper tissue was also traumatized during the surgery. Continue to monitor the area for redness, heat, swelling or discharge. It takes 7-10 days minimum for a surgery site to heal....but it can be tender for longer.

It doesn't look a 100%, i would expect it to look a little better after a week but no need to panic either, it doesn't look infected and it will heal eventually, it just may take a little longer than usual.

Nothing looks red but the neosporin (?) makes it look gooey. If this is all neosporin, then I would say it looks normal. If it is gooey without the neosporin, then I suspect it is infected and he needs to see his veterinarian. When in doubt, have him seen again by his vet as they can palpate the area to check for any fullness, heat or other signs of an issue. I recommend to stop applying the neosporin at this point unless your vet recommended it. Let this incision stay dry and this will help a scab to form which will finish the healing process faster. Although there is some bruising around the area this is quite normal and the wound looks to be clean, sealed and dry at this stage. Continue to monitor for any gaping or discharge from the wound but this is quite unlikely at this stage

He should have been healed after about 2 weeks. If he never had an e-collar (cone) on, he was likely licking the area when you weren't around or during the night. This could have caused the delay in healing. Ideally, he should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can. An e-collar should be obtained and placed as soon as possible to prevent further licking. A small tee shirt or onesie may prevent licking until you get a proper e-collar. Antibiotics may be indicated to treat infection. A veterinarian can dispense them, if indicated, after an exam.

Thank you for your question about Lucky. Yes, Lucky needs to wear the cone at all times until the incision is completely healed. If he leaves it alone, there is a high likelihood that it will heal on its own. It takes roughly 10-14 days to heal an incision and he damaged it around around day 10 so that is going to delay things a bit. Check the incision daily for redness, swelling or discharge. If you see this, he needs to go to the veterinarian for a likely infection from licking. Keep the incision clean and dry. Don’t worry about putting anything on it. It will likely form a new scab and will continue the healing process. I do recommend to have him checked by his veterinarian in about 1 week.
