My dog's neuter incision is draining a week later. Is it healing okay?

Hello, thank you for your question about your dog. Based on what you've described it sounds like he may have an infection secondary to his recent surgery, this is not uncommon. Typically, these infections due heal on their own with antibiotics, pain medication, and exercise restriction. The hole is actually a good thing as right now it is allowing the infected fluid to drain. It the hole does not heal or your dog continues to be lethargic or clinically ill I would definitely recommend having him rechecked by your veterinarian. They may need to flush out this area and help it close with additional stitches. Hope this helps, good luck!

Although there is some bruising around the area this is quite normal and the wound looks to be clean, sealed and dry at this stage. Continue to monitor for any gaping or discharge from the wound but this is quite unlikely at this stage

From the picture, it looks like it's healing well, but without seeing Frisco in person, I can't say for certain. If you are concerned about the incision, have him seen by the vet just to make sure everything is ok. Best of luck.

Both incisions do look red, and the incision from his undescended testicle looks as though it may be partially open. Unfortunately even though it had been two weeks it looks to me like the incisions may not have been fully healed and he was able to open them by licking. An infection would also be possible. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian. They might recommend re-suturing the incisions or potentially starting antibiotics and putting the e-collar back on.

Nothing looks red but the neosporin (?) makes it look gooey. If this is all neosporin, then I would say it looks normal. If it is gooey without the neosporin, then I suspect it is infected and he needs to see his veterinarian. When in doubt, have him seen again by his vet as they can palpate the area to check for any fullness, heat or other signs of an issue. I recommend to stop applying the neosporin at this point unless your vet recommended it. Let this incision stay dry and this will help a scab to form which will finish the healing process faster. Hello. This incision looks very good. It does not appear to be infected or inflamed in any way. That crusty appearance is normal with healing and scab formation. The incision appears to be closed, although it isn't a pretty incision, it is functional. : )There is one area that has a pustule (infected pocket) there, but it should heal with the antibiotics that he is on. This is a common thing that occurs in pets that have a mild reaction to the sutures or staples placed, nothing serious to be concerned about at this time. So far, this looks to be healing appropriately. : ) Keep an eye on the pustule there, it may rupture, and if it does just wipe it with a clean dry towel and make sure the incision does not get wet in any way. Also ensure that Waffles keeps his e-collar on at all times to avoid him getting to the incision and potentially taking out staples, which could cause this to open up. With the antibiotics on board, the incision and pustule should heal completely by day 10. Keep an eye out also for any profuse drainage, separation of the incision line, or increased redness, and get this rechecked by your vet sooner if seen. For now, things look quite stable. : ) I hope that Waffles continue to heal well post neuter. Best of luck and take care.
