My dog's neck is red and scabby from her collar. How to treat?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 60 lbs

I’ve taken my dogs collars. She wears a leather collar with her tags and a Seresto collar. Is there anything else I can do to heal her neck? Her skin/fur is turning brownish red and there are scabs and red bumps on her neck. Should I buy a different collar that isn’t leather? Should I have her treated a different way for fleas and ticks, instead of the Seresto collar?

It's hard to know exactly why she has the brownish discoloration. certainly you should try switching her to a different flea product and remove the collar. It may take up to two months for any discoloration to disappear. You could then try switching the collar to a nylon or fabric collar, again, it may take up to two months. In the mean time, there are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing Haddie's diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Haddie wear an elizabethan collar if she is itching. Have her examined by the veterinarian if it appears to be getting worse. My dog has a red mark on her neck from her collar. What is it?

It looks like Panda had an insect bite or a small injury to the skin under the collar and either she scratched it or the collar rubbed the area. Sores under collars in the summer when it is hot and humid can become more inflamed than normal. Please leave the collar off for a few days if you can and clean the area with an antibacterial soap. After rinsing and drying it you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment to help it heal and keep the the area protected from dirt. This should heal in a few days. Why does my dog have a rash, red bumps, and dark skin on her neck?

It looks like Pokki has a superficial infection on the skin of her neck. If she frequently wears a collar, this area can be prone to infection if the collar is not kept clean and dry. Rarely, pets can be allergic to the nylon material but this is very uncommon. It's generally more related to the collar being dirty/oily or getting wet. Sometimes parasites can also cause this type of rash as well. At home you can try washing the area with an antibacterial hand soap and rinse well. You can then apply a dab of coconut oil to the reddened bumps. Rub it in well. If this does not help within a week, make an appointment with your vet. That being said, if you wish to go ahead and have her seen, the doctor will provide medications that will clear it up faster. I hope this is helpful. Why is my dog losing fur on her neck due to collar & allergies?

It is possible that the allergies and the collar are acting in combination to cause the hair loss. Other reasons are also possible. You may try switching her diet to the brand Royal Canin or Nutro as both of these are aimed at skin health. Starting her on an additional omega-3 fatty acid supplement may also be beneficial. My dog's neck is red and puffy from a wet collar. Should I call vet?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. She could have developed some skin irritation from her wet collar rubbing on her skin. I recommend keeping the collar off for now and not letting her swim or get wet for at least the next few days. I would not put any more neosporin or other ointments on the area, as this can trap moisture and delay healing. If the area gets worse or you notice other areas becoming affected, Kenya should be seen by a veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!

My dog's neck is raw from collar. What safe remedy can I use?

If you think the lesion was caused by the collar rubbing, you can put some neosporin on it. The most important thing is to keep her from scratching. You may have to put a t-shirt or similar around her neck , so she cannot directly scratch the lesion. If the itching does not stop within 2 days or if the lesion starts to expand or ooze, you will need to stop the neosporin and take her to a veterinarian for an exam, as it may have been infected by bacteria. This could also be a fungus, in which case the neosporin will not work, If possible, wash her collar before putting it back on

My dog has a yellow scab under collar. Is it a pimple? How to treat?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Smith. He appears to have a small wound, irritation or potentially a growth. I recommend keeping his collar off (if it is safe to do so) so you can monitor to the area. Keep it clean and dry and it should heal within a few days. If this does not happen, then he will need to see his veterinarian. In this case, he would be examined to look for other signs of skin disease. Then the veterinarian will prescribed medication to help him heal. In the meantime, it is not necessary to apply an over-the-counter medication. I hope this information helps!
