My 12-yr-old dog has neck lumps, sneezing, and snoring. What's wrong?

It could be an infection, inflammation, tumor, etc. He should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to help diagnose and then determine the best treatment. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or other medications depending on the cause.

I would have the lumps on the neck checked out for sure. I am guessing those lumps are enlarged lymph nodes. This can be serious and I doubt they would want to put her under anesthesia with enlarged lymph nodes. I would call your vet and get her back in for an exam to check her out.

If there are lumps on his throat and he is having upper respiratory symptoms, I would recommend having x-rays of his upper airway done to see if there is any compression or deviation of the airway due to one of the lumps. He may also be dealing with allergies, in which case you can try an antihistamine. Most people use 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours for Benadryl. The vet can also insert a small needle into the masses and examine them under a microscope for a better understanding of what the lumps might be. I hope this helps! Reverse sneezing looks and sounds very aggressive but it is quite benign. The bulbs you are seeing are likely is salivary glands or lymph nodes but of course, I cannot say for sure without doing an exam of my own. For the reverse sneezing you can try Benadryl. See the link below. Since I cannot confirm that those “bulbs” are normal for her and since you don’t recall these previously, I would have your vet take a look at them. If they are enlarged lymph nodes throughout her body, it could be due to a development of lymphoma, or an infectious disease, for example. An early diagnosis of either (or another underlying issue) would be very beneficial for treatment. I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian, and any necessary testing done. I would get her in to see your vet. Since the snoring and breathing noise is a recent development, it could mean she has a tumor or polyp somewhere in her upper respiratory tract that is causing the problem. Catching it early is the best for a good outcome.

Based on your description it is likely mild allergies causing some nasal drainage. Over time allergies can also cause rhinitis in pets, which presents as snorting (stertor) sounds. If things don’t improve to seem to be bothering Remus your vet can prescribe some antihistamines to try or even some allergy medications. Secondary bacterial infections can also develop which typically cause decreased appetite, a low grade fever sometimes and yellow or geeen drainage from the nose. If you see those symptoms then it’s best to get him treated soon with a short course of antibiotics. Otherwise you may be able to wait things out to see if his allergies clear up. Using Heppa filters, frequent dusting and Benadryl can help with mild allergies in pets. I hope this helps and best wishes with your pet Remus.
