Why is my dog's neck bald, moist, and scabby a week after a tick bite?

Hi there. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is definitely a scab but from what, I don't know. This could be from trauma, an insect bite (like a tick) or the start of a skin infection. Unfortunately there is no way to tell for sure. I wouldn't be overly worried at this stage. Personally, if Buffy were my dog, I would just leave it alone and monitor it. But, if you want to do something at home, you can apply a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment over it twice a day. If it doesn't heal or it looks worse at any stage then get him to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

The smell usually indicates skin infection, so ideally you should take Jaceky to your local vets to get a course of antibiotics. Alternatively, you can first clip the wounds from the hair and use antiseptic solution ( 4% chlorhexidine would be best) and clean it twice a day. Also, make sure that your dog doesn't lick or scratch the wounds. For ticks, the most effective treatments are spot-on skin solutions that you can buy over-the-counter at pet shops or online.

This looks like a scab. He could have gotten this after a little bug bite, a local skin infection, a minor injury from being in the yard, or something else. Since it is so small, I would not be too concerned right now. If it isn't healing, you see discharge, you find more spots, or this spot gets larger, I would have your vet take a look at it to see if he needs any oral meds or other treatment to help it heal. This does not look like a tick. I would observe it and wait until the scab falls off by itself. This lesion should then be healed. If the scab increases in size or the lesion increases in size, you should have a vet examine it..

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This would not be normal after tick removal especially since it has been three weeks ago. I suspect the head (or some part of the head of the tick) may still be embedded into the deeper tissue. You will need to take Jake to your vet for them to check it and he may need to be sedated so the wound can be explored. You can also speak to your vet about what tick preventative would be best to use going forward to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. Ticks produce a lot in inflammation at the site where they feed. It is very common for tick reaction sites to be present for a few weeks.’ During that time it should be receding . However, if Burt is licking or scratching it he may have caused a secondary infection. If there is discharge, foul odor, or if seems to be getting larger rather than smaller then I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. You should clean it twice daily with boiled, warm water or 4% chlorhexidine (available over the counter at pharmacies). The spot should disappear within 5-7 days. However, if it is not getting better after a week, you should take Shemmy to your local vets to get an ointment with antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory agent.
