My dog's tick bite scab fell off, but the wound won't heal. What now?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 157 lbs

I pulled a tick off of my dog, Burt, 2 weeks ago. It was engorged but not fully. A scab developed where the tick was. The scab fell off yesterday but the sore has not fully healed. This is on the side of his face. He is acting normal and doesn’t show any other signs that he is in pain. Is there anything I can do to help the wound heal? Or do you recommend taking him to my vet?

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. Ticks produce a lot in inflammation at the site where they feed.
It is very common for tick reaction sites to be present for a few weeks.’ During that time it should be receding . However, if Burt is licking or scratching it he may have caused a secondary infection. If there is discharge, foul odor, or if seems to be getting larger rather than smaller then I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Unfortunately bite wounds can harbor bacteria that require systemic antibiotics. If your dog's wound hasn't healed after several weeks, he needs to be seen by a veterinarian to have the wound cleaned well and to be placed on an appropriate oral antibiotic. Shampoos and powders do not really help long term/do not kill the ticks unless they are actually attached at the time of application. I would recommend a preventative such as a Seresto collar (probably best at actually repelling) or a topical such as Advantix, or an oral product like Nexgard or Bravecto. Your vet's office may carry one or more of these products, or be able to order one for you.

It should heal up OK at home. You can use this wound spray on it. If after 4-5 days it does not look a lot better then Scout should be examined by your vet.

Oh my. Poor guy. This is quite unusual for a tick bite to cause this much tissue damage. I suspect there is likely a resistant bacteria involved here and the tissue around the edges of this do not appear healthy. This area needs to be surgically debrided to remove the dead and diseased tissue and then I would highly consider getting this area cultured ot determine what antibiotic will help resolve this. I am so sorry your pet is having a hard time healing this area, but this is going to require some thorough management if this is every going to heal properly. I would recommend scheduling an appt with your vet as soon as you can. Until you can get in to your vet, its best to clean this with Betadine diluted 50;50 with water. Dog's tick bite scab has a hard white mass. Is it normal?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This would not be normal after tick removal especially since it has been three weeks ago. I suspect the head (or some part of the head of the tick) may still be embedded into the deeper tissue. You will need to take Jake to your vet for them to check it and he may need to be sedated so the wound can be explored. You can also speak to your vet about what tick preventative would be best to use going forward to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Why is my dog's neck bald, moist, and scabby a week after a tick bite?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a small focus of infection. You can try to shave around it and clean it. If it continues to look superficial (as it looks on the picture), you can consider applying a thin film of triple antibiotic on it in case it is just a mild infection. If it does not resolve within 1 week of starting such treatment, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

What's this on my dog's head? Scab, tick bite, or something else?

Hi there. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is definitely a scab but from what, I don't know. This could be from trauma, an insect bite (like a tick) or the start of a skin infection. Unfortunately there is no way to tell for sure. I wouldn't be overly worried at this stage. Personally, if Buffy were my dog, I would just leave it alone and monitor it. But, if you want to do something at home, you can apply a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment over it twice a day. If it doesn't heal or it looks worse at any stage then get him to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Dog's tick bite left a bump on neck that won't go away. What to do?

This likley is some scar tissue left behind that was initially caused by a localized inflammatory response from the tick. However, to ensure it isn't something to be concerned about, you can opt to have this area tested through your vet with a skin cytology or biopsy. My dog's bug bites won't heal, she bites scabs, now has hard bumps.

This presentation could be due to the initial insect bite reaction which is now locally infected (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking that in the long term can cause more damage. Tick bite left a bloody bald spot on my dog. What should I do?

First of all, reactions to tick bites are not uncommon and can take a couple weeks to resolve. When you removed the tick, you might have left the tick's head in her, wich would cause a more severe reaction, it will still resolve itself in most cases, it will just take more time. You can put an antiseptic cream on it twice a day, it may help.
