My dog's long nail is twisted and orange. Is it a fungal infection?

The most common cause of brown discoloration of nails is a yeast infection. Most yeast infections are secondary to allergies and excessive licking of the paws. If he licks his paws then you should talk to your vet about trying medications to control his allergies. In the mean time you could soak his paws in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. Dry them well after soaking.

Those lesions could indicate a fungus but it could also indicate a previous split nail that is not healing properly. I recommend to have Fiona examined by the veterinarian to have this addressed. Split nails generally need to be clipped behind the break so they grow out properly. I hope this helps.

Hello. Posey may be chronically licking at this nail for some reason. Usually, this is an infection with Malessezia paronychia, a yeast like organism. Next time you see your veterinarian, suggest a skin scrape be done at the level of the nail bed to see if she can get more information. If organisms are seen, then treatment with an oral antifungal medication & a medicated shampoo for a month usually clears this infection up. The discolored nail will slowly grow out. As long as Ella is otherwise doing fine, it would ok to monitor as if it is just mild inflammation, it is expected to normalize and look like the rest of her nails within a day or two. Hello, sorry to hear about King. The nail looks like it may have broken at the base and may now be infected. The rest of the nail has likely lost its blood supply and therefore its changing colors. He will likely need to have this toe-nail removed under sedation and his local infection treated. Typically, nails grow back in a few weeks and the infection clears up in a couple of days with treatment. He may also require a light bandage to keep the site protected while it heals. Hello. These are commonly a chronic infection that has both bacteria and yeast involved. It is often necessary to treat with an oral antifungal plus a form of antibiotic (either topical or oral). These types of infections can take many weeks of treatment (6-10) to clear completely. A recheck with a veterinarian is needed in order to discuss the appropriate medications necessary to effectively treat this, but be prepared for a longer course of treatment than just the typical 10-14 days. I am sorry Waffle is not feeling well. It is hard to tell based on the picture but it appears that his skin might be infected above the nail bed. It does not appear the nail is the issue. I would recommend taking Waffle to the vet to determine where the infection is coming from and get proper treatment. hope that helps
