My dog has an odd lump in his mouth. What is it? Should I worry?

Possible causes of the mass are: a benign over growth of gum tissue, an epulis, or cancerous growths. Some epulids are: Fibromatous, ossifying, and acanthomatous. Acanthomatous epuli, in particular, are highly invasive to the bone and are usually located on the front part of the lower jaw. It is sadly impossible to tell from just looking at the mass to say what it could be. I recommend you make an appointment with your Vet. Lucky will have to go under anesthesia, have dental X-rays taken of the area and the mass biopsied or removed, if able. I hope this helps! I wish Lucky the best!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Is that supposed to be the same growth in both photos? The growth if the first photo looks suspicious for a malignant tumor. The tissue around the mass is swollen and the mass itself is raised and ulcerated; both can be signs of a malignancy. I cannot tell you for sure though just by looking at a photo. The second photo looks like a benign wart. In general, any new lumps/bumps should be examined by your vet. The first photo looks worrisome and I think you should have it checked in the next few days.

Hello. I would not be too worried, I just would like to have this checked out as soon as possible. Oral lesions have a way of sneaking up on you, so I am glad you were so diligent in finding this. It is quite easy to determine if this is a bad situation by removing a small piece of tissue & having a pathologist examine the cells under a microscope. Some oral lesions can look quite benign but can turn out to be very worrisome, but lets not jump the gun. You are doing the right thing not waiting months to have it looked at. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rex! Without seeing a picture I can't tell you if you should be concerned. Possibilities could be a swollen salivary gland under his tongue, a growth on his tongue or in his mouth, something stuck in his mouth or trauma to his tongue. If it is an irregular looking grey or white growth it could be a papilloma. They are contagious and most dogs get them from playing with other dogs. They are common in young dogs that go to dog parks or doggie day care. They are benign and usually go away on their own. if you can gt a picture I'd be happy to look. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, all your pictures were completely fuzzy, but regardless, it is always best to have lumps & bumps looked at quickly by your veterinarian. Fortunately, most are going to be harmless or benign, but if not, removal at a very early stage is almost always curative. Once you vet has a look, he will recommend the best treatment for Clyde. Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It's hard to tell for sure from the picture but that small area does not look like a major concern to me. It is near impossible to diagnose a growth on just a picture alone so it's probably a good idea to have a veterinarian check out the bump area within the next few weeks (especially if it changes in size, shape or color). A veterinarian will be able to take a needle aspirate of the area and see what kind of cells are there to determine if anything needs to be done about the bump. At minimum I would closely monitor the area and if the shape, size or color changes, take Lucy to be examined. Regards to you and Lucy!
