My Saint Bernard puppy has mouth burns. Should I go to emergency vet?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Those wounds look concerning for a chemical or thermal burn, but could be wounds from a fight. I strongly recommend a visit to the vet, as she might have wounds inside her mouth as well, and if she drank something corrosive might have a problem in her stomach as well. Either way, those look painful, and look like they might require antibiotics, especially if they are wounds from a fight. These you will need to get from the vet. At home human medications are not safe for dogs so do not give any human medications. Best of luck with River, I hope she feels better soon!

From the symptoms you are describing, I wonder if she may have chewed on something bitter or caustic - certain types of plants can cause blisters on the mouth and nausea, as well as toxins like drain cleaner or other household cleaners. You can try rinsing her mouth with fresh water if she will let you, and offering her some plain boiled chicken and rice to help settle her stomach. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms like vomiting, not wanting to eat, or acting lethargic or weak, I would recommend having her seen by an emergency vet today since these can be signs of a serious problem.

I hate to hear this is happening. Anytime a pet has changes to the respiratory pattern, this should be viewed as a potential emergency situation. I recommend to have him examined right away. Chewing does not normally cause ulcers. Viruses can. So can chewing on electrical cords which could also cause pulmonary edema which can show up as problems breathing. Yes, definitely take Winnie into a vet right away. From your description, it sounds like there is something causing her extreme discomfort and she could have something stuck in her mouth or may have eaten something caustic. Marley has quite significant tartar on his teeth, and there is inflammation of the immediate gums. The white plaques you can see look like ulcers caused by the tartar rubbing on the gums. He will likely need some pain relief and antibiotics, but ultimately he will need the teeth cleaned. I don't think you need to rush him to the vet tonight, but I would try and get him in tomorrow as he could do with some pain relief.

However, if you are concerned and/or if this area bothers your pet, I recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. Your vet can examine this area and determine if it is a normal variation in his skin, or if it could possibly be a mass. You can also monitor this area for ~1 week to see if it changes in size/shape or feel. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, this appears to be an ulcer or some kind of wound. I would check his mouth for other ulcerated areas. If there are none, he could have licked something that burned him like a chemical or something hot. Luckily, the mouth heals very fast and there should be no treatment required. If you find that it is not healing, he should go to the vet for antibiotics. Good luck I hope this helps!
