My dog ate mouse poison. Why didn't the vet induce vomiting?

If your dog ate anti-coagulant rat poison, it makes no sense to wait to give him the Vit. K1. Vit. K1 will only work if your dog ate rat poison that is an anticoagulant. You should contact your vet's office for a recommendation as we are not in a position legally to give out dosages. In order to do legally so we would have to have a patient-veterinarian-owner relationship with you. Your veterinarian also knows your dog and the potential risks for your dog receiving this medication. If your dog ate Bromethalin rat poison, Vit K1 will not work. It makes the brain swell and is moderately to severely toxic. There is no antidote, only supportive care, such as inducing emesis (vomiting, to remove as much poison as possible), charcoal (to hopefully neutralize some of the poison, iv fluids and medication to reduce the cerebral edema (brain swelling). As with many poisons, the dose is important. You will need to monitor your dog for a few days for incoordination (ataxia), tremors, seizures, and paralysis. If your dog is not showing any of those signs 24 hrs after ingestion, there is a good chance that he will not have eaten a detrimental amount and therefore may not need treatment.

Mila should be seen by a veterinarian immediately. This product is an anti-coagulant poison that inhibits normal blood clotting and leads to internal bleeding. Fortunately, there is an effective antidote (Vitamin K) but it's important to make sure you minimize the amount of poison Mila absorbs, and get her started on the antidote. Depending on the timing of the ingestion, your vet may make Mila vomit, and may give her something to minimize absorption, or they may recommend testing her current blood clotting ability. Oh no poor Sophie! Definitely induce vomiting using 3% hydrogen peroxide at the dose of 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds. Repeat every 15-20 minutes, up to three times, until Sophie vomits. If she doesn't vomit after doing this three times, get her into a vet right away. Even if she does vomit, I would still take her into the vet right away. She will need activated charcoal to prevent absorption of any toxins still in her stomach, and she will need vitamin K injections to enable production of blood clotting factors.

Vitamin K1 is usually dosed at 2.5 mg/kg twice daily as an antidote for anticoagulant rodenticide and giving with a fatty meal is recommended. I would definitely check in with the vet who instructed you to give the medication before starting however - that dose works out to 34 mg for a 30 lb dog, and that would be a lot of 100 mcg tablets to give. There is a veterinary version of Vitamin K1 that comes in 25 and 50 mg tablets that would work better. It would really depend on the type of poison and how much Eric could have gotten. At the very least, I would recommend that he be seen by a vet for baseline blood work and coagulation times and to start Vitamin K in case it was an anticoagulant rodenticide. If it was a below-toxic ingestion, the Vitamin K is still safe to be given.

Regardless of the dose ingested, it is recommended to at the very least start then on vitamin k which can help tremendously if in fact Roxy got anywhere near her toxic dose. This is an inexpensive and easy to implement therapy. She is not at a point that any effects are expected as it is too early in the course for that. I recommend that you have Roxy evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They could check her out and treat her accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

I am sorry to hear about your worry with Charley! It sounds like luckily she is in the clear! If she wasn't showing any signs of toxicity and started vitamin K right away, then most cases would do just fine. Also, it sounds like she didn't ingest enough to cause toxic effects if the company is correct. If you want to feel even more certain (in terms of amount ingested) you can call Animal Poison Control if you know the exact brand/concentration of the bait she ingested, then they can calculate the toxic dose needed to cause symptoms.
