Why does my dog only mount other dogs when they visit our home?

It's hard to say why Duke might be doing this with only one specific dog. Humping in dogs is often associated with frustration, over-excitement, or can be an attempt to solicit attention or play in some cases. It would help to be able to observe the dogs interacting in order to make a better guess at why he does this. If it's causing a problem, the best option would be to simply separate Duke from this dog when you are at your friend's house, or keep him on-leash so that he can't bother the other dog. You could also try giving him something special to chew on when he is there, such as a bully stick or rawhide, to help keep him busy.

Since they are both neutered, this behavior is likely caused by over-stimulation. It's not sexual, it's just an inappropriate outlet for being overwhelmed or overexcited -- think really tired toddler starting to throw things and hit his friends. I would recommend redirecting him to a toy or playing with you, or remove him calmly from the situation. You don't want to punish him for the behavior, but you do want to stop it.

This is a dominance behavior, more than a sexual behavior. Neutering does not make these types of behaviors go away - even some female dogs will mount other dogs! Rico is likely just playing and trying to assert his dominance and be "alpha" to the other dogs. This is not a sexual behavior, but likely a response to stress, anxiety or to assert his dominance. Correct the behavior immediately when you see it. Remove him from the dog with a stern "No" and offer a toy or task to distract him. Praise and reward him when he complies. If he persists, separate him until he settles down. Be firm and be consistent.

Hello there! I understand the frustration of having an unneutered male dog. They don't have hormone cycles like females do, so they don't have a "heat" like females do. Essentially, their hormone levels are the same all the time, which can be even more frustrating. Mounting behavior is not all hormonal, and does have a component of dominance (so he may still do this even after he's neutered). Even females will mount other dogs if they want to express their dominance over them. The mounting behavior will hopefully abate once a dominance hierarchy is established in your home between the dogs, but not necessarily. It can also spur fights, so be watchful over your dogs when they are together, and I recommend against leaving them alone together until you are comfortable with Shadow's personality and interactions with your older dog. Neutering may help, but it takes a long time for those hormones to get out of their system (at least a month), so in the meantime, consistent training can be helpful in stopping the behavior. I have seen some trainers keep a leash and harness on a dog that jumps or mounts, so that when the dog starts to jump up, they can step on the leash and prevent it. It's important to have another task for your dog to do instead of jumping/mounting, so starting off with teaching a solid "sit" could be helpful. Reward him with a treat for any positive behavior, and ignore undesired behavior. I highly recommend contacting a good trainer or veterinary behaviorist if the behavior continues.
