My dog was exposed to mold. Can mold exposure cause seizures in dogs?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 2 years and 9 months old | 50 lbs

My dog was exposed to mold toxicity that was in our home she did not eat or ingest it just by inhalation and her feet on the carpet.. She has seizures now. Vet won't look for mold exposure by blood test and doesn't agree anyway. But I know because we lived in it. What Can I give her to help support her lived through her detoxing

I'm sorry to hear that Izzy has been having seizures and I understand your concerns. I've been looking through the veterinary community's information network (VIN) and have been unable to find any studies, case reports or conference proceedings that can prove causation or even correlation of environmental exposure to molds causing seizure activity. While the lack of information does not make it impossible that Izzy's seizures are related to molds, it seems far more likely to me that given her young age, this is the onset of idiopathic (i.e. we don't know why it is occurring) epilepsy. The onset of epilepsy most commonly occurs in dogs 2-4 years of age. If molds are contributing to Izzy's concerns, I would expect to see respiratory changes rather than neurologic signs. To my knowledge, there are no blood tests available to test for environmental mold exposures in dogs. Continue monitoring her breathing, seizure frequency and duration, appetite and energy level. Unfortunately, there are no supportive therapies or supplements that can erase her mold exposure.

Since molds most often impact the kidneys, there really are no supplements that you could give Izzy to help get through this. The only thing that would help would be aggressive fluid therapy to flush the toxins out of the kidneys. If Izzy continues to be painful, nauseous or having ongoing seizures you should take her to the veterinarian right away.

Why is my 3-month-old puppy having seizures, vomiting, and aggression?

I would be very concerned with Izzy having this many seizures in such a short period of time. Young, small breed dogs can suffer from a condition called a shunt. With this disease the liver is unable to filter out toxins like it normally would. When this happens and the levels of certain enzymes get too high they affect the brain and cause seizures. This happens more frequently after a meal. I would recommend having Izzy checked out by your vet. They will likely run a blood test to check her liver enzymes and a test called bile acids to see how well the liver is working. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this in your young pup! Hopefully you can get a diagnosis and start managing her seizures soon.

Could my puppy's seizures be caused by strong paint smells or fumes?

I suppose it's theoretically possible that paint fumes could cause seizures or other neurologic issues, but it would have to be an extremely severe exposure (i.e., trapped in a small space with very strong fumes for a long time). I have never seen a case of this, and in my experience it would be unlikely. If your puppy is having seizures, more likely causes of this would include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), an infectious disease like canine distemper, a liver shunt, or ingestion of something toxic. Regardless of the underlying cause, seizures in a puppy are a medical emergency, so I would recommend taking Sasha to the vet immediately for an exam and treatment.

It is possible it may be food related - certain liver issues such as shunts can cause build up of chemicals in the blood causing seizures after food. This would need specific liver blood tests and possibly ultrasound to identify and if present can be managed with diet and medication for the most part although some may require surgery. My dog ate moldy food and is throwing up and shaking, what do I do?

I am so sorry that your pet ate moldy food. Mycotoxicosis can be mild or more severe depending on the amount ingested. In severe cases it can even lead to death. Severe signs can occur with dosages of 0.175 mg/kg PO. Death can occur with ingestion of 0.5 mg/kg PO. Early signs include restlessness, panting, hypersalivation, with or without vomiting. Mild to moderate muscle tremors develop and may progress to severe tremors, and/or seizures. I would highly recommend taking your pet to your local ER vet right away for detoxification, IV fluids, and supportive care to give her the best chance of survival. My dog has seizures. Could LED lighting in our home be the cause?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Taino has seizures; these can be scary for both him and whoever sees them. The lighting is not a cause of seizures in dogs. Seizures can be caused by things within the head itself (tumor, stroke, infection or inflammation), or from other systemic causes such as liver disease, kidney disease, certain toxins, etc. When all of these possible causes have been ruled out by diagnostics (bloodwork, MRI, cerebrospinal fluid analysis), it may be determined that a dog has idiopathic epilepsy. I recommend keeping a log of Taino's seizures to note when exactly they happen, how long they last, what they look like, etc. Definitely keep your veterinarian updated whenever he has a seizure, because he may soon require treatment with anti-seizure medication if they become more frequent or severe. My dog is having seizures. Could a hibiscus plant be the cause?

While the hibiscus is toxic to dogs, according to the ASCPA, it causes vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and anorexia. It does not cause seizures, but if Mia is having seizures, she should see a vet right away. Causes of seizures include low blood sugar, certain toxins, trauma to the head, liver disease, kidney failure, and brain tumors. She should be seen by a vet to determine the cause of her seizures so they can be treated. If Mia seizures again before you can seek vet care: - Don't put your hands near her mouth - Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling - Monitor her at all times during the seizure to ensure that she cannot hurt himself by crashing into furniture, etc - If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately
