My dog missed Trifexis for 3 months. Can I restart it safely?

Now missing that dose over longer time periods could potentially cause a problem due to the life cycle of the heartworm and what stages the medicine kills, since the heartworm goes through several larval stages once inside a dog or a cat. The best thing to do in your case is exactly what you did, give the dose as soon as you realize you missed it and of course, contact your vet for their advice. Ellie should be fine. Yes. If your dog has had trifexis before then I would not worry and continue it on your normal schedule. If she has never had it before, I would choose a different type of heart worm and flea prevention because the most common side effect is vomiting.

Hi there. Trifexis has a very wide margin of safety (a dog could eat an entire box and not have any serious issues, in most cases), so it's unlikely that this will cause any problems. The most likely side effect would be vomiting or GI upset, in the first day or two after taking the meds. If she's acting normal so far, you probably won't see any issues at all. It's fine for her to continue with her normal daily routine as far as eating, exercising, etc.

If you only missed 1 month, you should be fine. Just resume Heartgard right away . If you just want peace of mind, then you can have Lilly retested in 6 month from now; however, the chances of infection are pretty low. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is never too late! At 7 months old I recommend that your Vet test Midna for heart worm disease now. If she is negative start Heartgard then retest her again in 6 months. It takes a heart worm 6 months from the bite of an infected mosquito to mature in to adults and cause a test to be positive. So testing now only proves she wasn't bitten in the first 1 month of life. I highly recommend year round heart worm prevention for the entirety of the pets life. Getting heart worm disease can be deadly and treating heart worm disease is expensive and can also cause be deadly. I hope this helps and I wish you and Midna the best.

No. They both cover hearteorms and should be given at least 2 weeks apart. If you just need the flea control portion of the trifexis you can get a separate tablet to cover it that can be given with heartgard such as nexgard or simparica

Hi there. Yes, that should be okay - Trifexis doesn't have any harmful interactions with those meds. The only possible issue I can see is that all three of them have stomach upset as a potential side effect, so if your girl has a sensitive stomach or has a history of vomiting when you give the Trifexis, then it may be better to wait until she's finished with her current meds to give it. But if not, it should be fine to go ahead and give it today if you want to. :)
