My dog is on Meloxicam & Prednisone. Is this safe for his liver?

If I'm understanding her medication plan correctly, I'm a bit concerned because Metacam and prednisolone should not be given together - this combination of drugs can cause serious side effects such as stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, and I do not know of any veterinarians who would recommend giving both at the same time. I would recommend calling your vet in the morning to clarify the medication instructions, because it could be very dangerous for Peapumpkin to take both of these medications at once.

These drugs, if given at appropriate dosages, should not interact. I guess cerenia was given for vomiting, so meloxicam is not indicated though. Why did you ketoconazole? It is not indicated in pancreatitis cases.

Great question! No, you absolutely CANNOT give a steroid (prednisone) at the same time as a NSAID (Metacam). This is a very big no-no! This can cause huge, life-threatening side effects. He can take a muscle relaxant and/or an opiate along with the steroid. You should also you vet about these medications as they are prescription medications. Hello, without knowing the reason for the Pred., I cannot comment fully of this particular situation, but yes, Pred. is often associated with the elevation of liver values. I would definitely have Piluko on a liver protectant like Sam-e with milk thistle ( we have Denamarin here in the US ). As for the vomiting, your vet may recommend the metoclopramide or another medication such as Cerenia to control it. You can also try ginger root as it does have anti-nausea properties. The dose is wide, from 15-200 mg/kg every 12 hours, so start low & look to find a ginger root capsule that contains no other ingredients, especially xylitol. Metoclopramide is a medication that is used to promote motility of the GI tract and decrease acid reflux. Prednisone is a steroid medication that has anti-inflammatory properties among others. Prednisone can potentially cause many side effects, such as stomach upset. I would recommend monitoring Heather closely for any symptoms such as i appearance, vomiting, or dark stools. As long as the smaller dog doesn't have any pre-existing liver or kidney issues, its unlikely that this will be a problem. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite, or lethargy; if you notice any of these symptoms, take him to the vet for an exam and bloodwork. Hello, Lola is indeed at higher risk for adverse reactions even after a single dose of meloxicam, however your veterinarian is likely not too concerned with the severity of her kidney disease. Therefore, the side effects of meloxicam to her kidneys would be dependent on how severe her kidney disease is. I would recommend monitoring her kidney values for the next five days as Meloxicam has a long half-life and can take up to 5 days to remove completely from the body. This could be done with daily blood checks. Also know that of all the NSAIDs, Meloxicam has the widest safety margin in the phase of kidney disease. Look for any signs of increased drinking, decreased urinations, lethargy, painful abdomen, vomiting, or a decreased appetite and have her evaluated immediately if you note any.
