My dog has low platelets. Will Meloxicam lower them further?

Overdoses of meloxicam can cause severe stomach ulcers, internal bleeding, and even perforation of the stomach or intestines as well as kidney damage in some cases. If J is still having problems, I would definitely recommend letting your vet know that this is a possibility - he should have blood work to check his kidney function, as well as fluids, anti-nausea medication, and stomach protectants. Therefore, the side effects of meloxicam to her kidneys would be dependent on how severe her kidney disease is. I would recommend monitoring her kidney values for the next five days as Meloxicam has a long half-life and can take up to 5 days to remove completely from the body. This could be done with daily blood checks. Also know that of all the NSAIDs, Meloxicam has the widest safety margin in the phase of kidney disease. Look for any signs of increased drinking, decreased urinations, lethargy, painful abdomen, vomiting, or a decreased appetite and have her evaluated immediately if you note any. It seems a little unusual for a single dose of meloxicam to affect Blanca after two weeks, but I suppose it is possible. I'd recommend having your vet examine the stool and Blanca. They might also recommend checking some lab work.

The problem I see with these medications is that he is taking a steroid (prednisone) and an a non-steroidal (NSAID) - meloxicam at the same time. It is not recommended those be given together. That does seem quite high. In my drug handbook, the reported dose is 0.1mg/kg. For a 120 pound dog, this is 5mg. I would ask your vet to re-calculate the dose or choose a different NSAID all together. Personally, I don't like using meloxicam in large breed dogs and I use carprofen, deracoxib, or firocoxib.

Unfortunately, a well-documentive side effect of Meloxicam (and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) is that it causes decreased blood flow to the kidneys, sometimes resulting in kidney damage. If Candy has been diagnosed with kidney problems, she definitely should no longer take Meloxicam. Your vet can discuss other alternative for pain control, including Tramadol, gabapentin, acupuncture, and physical therapy. The Azodyl can certainly be continued, but I would not give the Meloxicam, and likely she'll never be able to take it again.
