What should I feed my GSD with megaesophagus? Wet, dry, or homemade?

I would look to see if they have megaesophagus listed. If not, you will just want to look for a recipe that has the consistency you are looking for. I hope this helps.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Rooney has been diagnosed with megaesophagus. This means that the esophagus is abnormally enlarged/dilated, and does not move food down toward the stomach appropriately. This can make dogs more prone to regurgitating their food or water, meaning the food or water falls from their mouth after eating/drinking. Dogs with megaesophagus are more likely to develop aspiration pneumonia, which can be life-threatening. The type of food is not as important as how you feed Rooney. It will be important to feed Rooney in an upright position, and offer him meatballs of wet dog food one at a time. There are specific dog feeding chairs, called Bailey chairs, that you can purchase online, that help dogs with megaesophagus eat upright. I hope this is helpful!

No you don't have to feed both wet and dry food. If the wet food gives Mercy the runs, then simply stop giving it and stick with the dry kibble from now on. However there is a possibility that the wet food is not to blame for the loose stool, at which point you can try giving her 1-2tsp of canned pumpkin (not the filling) to her food daily to add fiber and help form the stools. If this still doesn't help then it's best to have her stool examined by your vet.

I recommend a large breed puppy food for your GSD puppy, and a medium breed puppy food for the 10 month old puppy. I can understand it may be a pain to have two separate foods, but large breed puppies have different nutritional needs due to their size. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I feed my own dogs Iams, and they love it. Good on you for taking them off the raw food diet! Best of luck.

I'm sorry Sophie has been so sick, but it's great that her liver enzymes have dropped! Royal Canin is a high quality food, and if your vet thinks she should eat Royal Canin GI canned food, then I agree. The vet knows which food would be best for Sophie giving they have been working with her in person, but knowing the quality of Royal Canin as a food, I think it's a great choice for her :-)

Hello! I recommend feeding a diet that has been established for a long time and has undergone feeding trials and follows AAFCO nutrition standards. Purina, Royal Canin, Hill's, and Iams are all examples of good brands. I would avoid any raw, grain free, other "fad" diets as their lack of scientific evidence often leads to chronic nutritional deficiencies in senior pets that are fed these diets long term. At 3months he should be able for dry food, if necessary to get him started you may wet with one cup of warm water. If wetted, it must be removed after 20mibs before it starts to ferment as his can cause diarrhea. I would not recommend adding milk as this alters the carefully balanced minerals in the diet and can also cause stomach upsets
