My MDR1 dog has tapeworms. Are Droncit injections or Dolpac 10 safe?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 1 month old

My Collie mix dog, has a Multi-Drug Resistance Gene. (Mrd1*) She has always taken Droncit, 50 mg. (3 pills), for Tapeworms. I have a new Vet now, and he suggested giving her Droncit by Injection, if she reacts to the Dolpac 10 he wants to try her on, as he doesn't carry Droncit tablets. #1 = are Droncit injections Okay for my dog, as the tablets were? #2 = If she only has Tapeworms, should she be given Dolpac 10, for other types of worms, also? Or, just the Droncit Injection?

None of these medications should cause problems related to Tasha's MDR1 gene. Personally, I prefer giving oral deworming medications rather than injections, but as I said, this is purely personal preference. Either Droncit or Dolpac 10 should be effective to treat tapeworms and it should not be an issue to administer the additional active ingredients in Dolpac 10. Many deworming medications contain more than one active ingredient and simply provide for a more broad spectrum of treatment. If Tasha would experience a reaction to the Dolpac 10 (which would be quite unusual), you could also ask your vet if he can prescribe Droncit tablets from either a local or online pharmacy if you are more comfortable with this course of treatment.

    MDR-1 sensitive dogs are sensitive to Ivermectin which is a heartworm preventative, and a few others at high dosage ranges. However Tasha is safe to take Droncit which contains Praziquantel and also Dolpac which contains all intestinal dewormers. These are not shown or cause adverse reactions innoets with MDR- sensitivity.

    There are no known contraindications of treating Tasha's tapeworms with praziquantel/ pyrantel/ oxantel (Dolpac 10) despite her MDR1 gene. As always, confirm any medications with Tasha's vet prior to administration.

What heartworm meds are safe for my Collie mix with the MDR1 gene?
Technically, all heartworm preventatives (even those with ivermectin) are safe in dogs with an MDR1 gene mutation since the effective dose of medication in heartworm is significantly lower than that which would cause neurotoxicity. However, most vets will preferentially choose selamectin (Revolution) or milbemycin (Interceptor) based products for MDR1 mutant dogs over ivermectin (Heartgard) based products. If Tasha has historically been very sensitive to heartworm preventatives, I would advise giving her flea/tick prevention and heartworm prevention 2 weeks apart rather than simultaneously. Your vet will be able to perform a blood test for heartworm disease prior to starting Tasha on a heartworm preventative, as all are prescription based.

The dewormer i usually recommend is called Drontal plus, bear in mind that unlike the flea/tick products, dewormers do not protect your dog from future infestation, it only kills the worms on spot. for fleas and ticks i usually recommend Bravecto tablet or Advantix spot on. all these medications are considered to be high quality and safe.

Giving second Drontal dose for tapeworms: Is it safe? Side effects?
The reason for the second deworming 3 weeks later is to kill any tapeworms that were still immature at the last deworming and were not yet sensitive to the dewormer or if she has gotten infected again since the last deworming. Drontal is a very safe medication with very few side effects since it only affects the parasites in the GI tract. Dog has roundworms. How long to wait for dewormer after Droncit?
I would wait one week before giving the nitroscanate since it also contains a medication to treat tapeworms (as does the Droncit). If you can give a different dewormer that does not contain a tapeworm medication (like Drontal - not Drontal Plus) then you can give it now.

How much Drontal Plus should I give my 7kg puppy for tapeworms?
Drontal is a very safe deworming tablet, so I would give Tofy one table. Doses of up to 10 times the recommended dose will usually only cause some nausea, so giving her a little bit extra will not likely result in any harm. I hope this helps!

My dog has flatworms. Will piperazine work and is it safe for Ulcerative Colitis?
Duke likely has tapeworms, and that requires praziquantel to treat. Praziquantel is available by prescription only from the vet. Unfortunately, piperazine doesn't kill tapeworms, only roundworms. I'd make an appointment with Duke's vet, and they can prescribe the medication as needed. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
