My dog's MDR1 gene results are missing. Does my new vet need them?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 1 month old

Is it necessary for my new Vet to know which type of Mdr1 Gene my dog has? My dog was tested when young, by a Vet that has since retired, and I never received the Summary of which Type of Mdr1 Gene Tasha has. If my new Vet Needs to know the Type, to treat her for Tapeworms, and Heartworm Prevention, etc., should I have another DNA test done?

Hello. It is important to know with Border Collies, and other Collie mixes in particular, whether they are MDR1 normal or not to ensure you use the proper products on Tasha. You can just assume she has an abnormal gene and get products that are safe for an abnormal gene. However, if the clinic is still practicing where you took Tasha before, you should be able to get her records, as records should be kept for 5 years and Tasha is only 4 years old, so you can try to call the vet and get these records. You can also try discussing with your vet about which lab the test would have been sent to, as the lab that ran the test may have a record of it as well. You can, of course, get her tested again as well. These are all options. Good luck with Tasha.

The test that is performed is determining if Tasha has the MDR1 gene from both mother and father (mutant/mutant), MDR1 gene from one parent (normal/mutant) or does not have the MDR1 gene at all (normal/normal). What heartworm meds are safe for my Collie mix with the MDR1 gene?

Technically, all heartworm preventatives (even those with ivermectin) are safe in dogs with an MDR1 gene mutation since the effective dose of medication in heartworm is significantly lower than that which would cause neurotoxicity. However, most vets will preferentially choose selamectin (Revolution) or milbemycin (Interceptor) based products for MDR1 mutant dogs over ivermectin (Heartgard) based products. If Tasha has historically been very sensitive to heartworm preventatives, I would advise giving her flea/tick prevention and heartworm prevention 2 weeks apart rather than simultaneously. Your vet will be able to perform a blood test for heartworm disease prior to starting Tasha on a heartworm preventative, as all are prescription based.

My MDR1 dog has tapeworms. Are Droncit injections or Dolpac 10 safe?

None of these medications should cause problems related to Tasha's MDR1 gene. Personally, I prefer giving oral deworming medications rather than injections, but as I said, this is purely personal preference. Either Droncit or Dolpac 10 should be effective to treat tapeworms and it should not be an issue to administer the additional active ingredients in Dolpac 10. Many deworming medications contain more than one active ingredient and simply provide for a more broad spectrum of treatment. If Tasha would experience a reaction to the Dolpac 10 (which would be quite unusual), you could also ask your vet if he can prescribe Droncit tablets from either a local or online pharmacy if you are more comfortable with this course of treatment.

MDR1 can be tested very easily by most veterinary laboratories, you will need to take Morty to the vet, they will take a blood sample then they will send it to the lab, within 3-4 days you should get an answer.

Does coat color or white feet indicate MDR1 gene mutation in dogs?

Hello and thank you for posting your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Genetics for hair or coat color and the gene for MDRI are not known to be linked. The mutation is commonly seen in herding breed dogs and can be tested for through a blood sample or cheek swab that is available through most veterinary clinics. Adopted dog, no vet records. Can I get them or re-vaccinate my puppy?

In most cases, you'll need owner permission in order for records to be transferred over, so while you can contact the vet, you may not be able to obtain full records. That said, they may at least be able to confirm neuter/vaccine status for you so you can let your vet know. If you can't get any records, you can also have your current vet perform a titer test to see where Wooly's immunity levels are, and then booster vaccines from there.
