My dog has mammary cancer. What are other treatment options?

Hello I would check with your veterinarian about doing xrays to see if there is any evidence of spread to her lungs. Also discuss with your veterinarian if all of the mass was removed ("clean margins") or if additional surgery is needed. In some cases if there is no spread of the cancer and it was completely removed do further treatment is needed.

I am so sorry that your and Gingers are both going through this. Mammy tumors in cats can be malignant or benign. Unfortunately, studies show that 90% of them are malignant and aggressive where only 10% are benign. The normal treatment would be a full mastectomy on the side that the tumor is located. With her age, this is still an option but you may just consider taking off just the mass to make recovery easier. The other option is to do nothing and just keep her comfortable. I am sorry that she is going through this and I know it isn't easy on your as she is part of the family. I'm very sorry Daisy has so many tumors! The course of treatment depends on the grade of the mast cell tumors (MCT). In low grade tumors that have been removed with adequate margins, further treatment is typically not needed. If there is spread to local lymph nodes, for example, then addition treatment is needed. Once the grade of the tumors is known, that will help your decision, but given that you think she might be at stage 3, I would recommend doing surgery and chemotherapy. As for holistic treatments, there may be complimentary treatments you can do in addition to the surgery and chemo, such as acupuncture, and I would discuss the use those with your vet.

It depends on whether or not it is a primary lung tumor metastatic disease. Ideally, you should take your pet to see a veterinary oncologist to discuss the best treatment plans(surgery vs. chemotherapy). Discuss referral with your veterinarian.

It can vary from patient to patient, but without aggressive surgery and additional therapies like chemotherapy, it may only be weeks or months. Additional testing that would be needed is abdominal ultrasound and blood work. It is probably a question best directed to the vet that diagnosed the cancer, since they have more information on your case than I do.

Poor Katana. Unfortunatley, there is no way to know exactly the type of tumor this is without doing an exam and taking an aspirate of it to look at it under the microscope. From the looks of the picture though, I am really concerned that it is malignant. From its location, it is most likely a mammary cell carcinoma or a mast cell tumor. I would strongly recommend to have this surgically removed if possible ASAP and have it sent in to the pathologist to diagnose the exact type of tumor. Your vet will be able to give you other options if this isn't possible. I hope this helps!
